I understand that Nursing is one of the "hot" college courses here in the Philippines because of the demand of nurses abroad. But I would like to point out that the ICT (Information and Communication technology) industry is also high on demand of workers abroad. I have seen some IT or Computer Science Students changing courses because of the they think that nursing is their only ticket to go abroad.
I have nothing against choosing nursing as they choice of career because I respect their personal decisions on this matter. I just wanna point out that Nursing is not the only job offered abroad.

There are many options if you would like to go abroad...it's only nurses which are in demand abroad. I think there are more demands for skilled workers -- those who do manual labor like technicians, etc. IT is still considered to be in demand. I have many friends working abroad. I don't think the opportunity is limited only to those who earned degrees, there are also opportunities for undergrads.
I think that if you really want to go abroad, you must have the determination and of course you need to have a reliable agency and enough money for the processing of papers. I suggest that we should not resort to quick fixes since this is not reliable. I believe that it would also help if you already have contacts in the country where you wanted to work -- like relatives or friends.

Of course, not. Here in Thailand, most Filipinos here work as teachers. Teaching English especially in Asia is a booming industry as more and more schools go inter(national).
Well, we can't deny that many Filipinos opt for going to the US and being a nurse is the easiest way in but not the only way.
As a matter of fact, in Canada, US, and Australia, they are lacking and recruiting for skilled workers and includes IT, Teachers, Agriculturist, Engineers, etc., etc.
And for me even if it is the only way to go to the US, I won't take up nursing course. I just can't. I'm too chickened. LOL!

No doubt Nursing is good and can fetch you job abroad but there are other fields to hot. IT is equally very much hot abroad and with large number of companies implementing SAP to their systems there is huge demand for SAP professionals too. There are lot of modules in SAP and all are in demand.

There are also many courses that are accepted abroad. But as of now most of the needed courses abroad are nurses. And it is the job that pays higher amount of money. So many Filipinos want to become nurses to have a greener pasture. Even doctors are changing career to nurses just to earn bigger amount of money. Well, we cannot blame this people because of the present economic situation in our country today. We need to work on our own to have a better life.

I think there are quite a few things that will allow you to work abroad. Culinary arts is definitely a good choice to be able to work abroad. I'd say teaching is also a good one. I know that English speaking teachers have many opportunities to go to other countries and teach. I'm not sure if that would work for other countries (not to say English is all they can do but that's all I've ever seen as I live in an English speaking country).
