how to completly erease a hard drive

i am giving away my old computer and i dont want people to get any of my information. i wanted to know how to erease my hard drive. i want no data left. if anybods knows how to do this plz respond. thank you

Lol, are you under investigation or something? kidding. Well if your throwing it out, just take a sledge hammer to it. Othewr wise, use a boot disk and run Fdsk.

i've heard taking a magnet to the hard drive gets rid of the data is that true

I just had to do the same thing and asked some friends but couldn't understand what the heck they were talking about. Since my old one is only going to my grandson I'm not worried about anything that's on it although I did take out any banking information just in case.
