Translation of these words.

I came across these words and wondered if anyone knows Swedish could translate this for me. "Da vi arligt skarskadade vart forflutna, sag vem vi hade varit och vad vi hade gjort borjade vi battre forsta oss sjalva." This would be appreciated as they came in a journal and I really would like to know what it means. There are marks over the vowels but they are not on my keyboard. Thanks if you can help.
