I asked my caged canary,
“Li’l bird, why do you sing?”
She answered me in her lilting voice,
“I sing for hope, and what it’ll bring.”
“I sing for my freedom,
asking an end to this pain,
I sing to the almighty above,
for this may well be my last refrain.”
Again I asked of her,
“Li’l bird, why do you sing?”
She answered me in her lilting voice,
“I sing for I shan’t see another spring.”
“I sing to the lovely breeze,
to caress my every feather,
I sing to the old oak tree,
for we won’t long be together.”
Yet again, I asked of her,
“Li’l bird, why do you sing?”
She answered me naught in her lilting voice,
for she lay in her cage, a lifeless, dead thing.
I think I might have heard strains of loneliness,
and desolation in her song,
but what good is a dead canary to anyone,
so I shrugged my shoulders, and simply walked along.
PS I can understand if this one sounds rather choppy, I've put pen to paper after a long, long time...
