It is said silence is golden,have any of you tried observing silence?

Like going on a fast i've heard of people observing silence for a day,for a week etc.Did anyone of you try it? If so how long? what was your experience?I cannot even imagine myself doing anything like that.

Sometimes I find myself having what I refer to as 'quiet days' I manage about 6 words at a time and just like to spend time alone maybe reading a book in a quiet room or just going for walks. I find it relaxing to keep quiet and just observe what is going on around me.
