Do You Multitask While Driving?

I was going to start this post by asking if you are a stupid driver? But I know that there are some circumstances that can not be avoided and I do not want to offend anyone that does not deserve it. But, some people need to be offended enough to change. I just finished an article in this month's Reader's Digest about how drivers risk the lives of themselves and others, by doing some really dumb things behind the wheel. I do not drive because I am very nervous and I realize that getting behind the wheel takes my life and the lives of many others into my hands. If I took a life, I could not live with it. In the article, they said some pretty frightening things. One lady shaves her legs while driving. Another lady makes cold slaw. A guy talks on his cell phone, curls his hair, and drives with his knees. Then, there are the teenagers that study, play video games, and text message while driving. To me, all of these are worse than drunk driving, because when you are drunk, your mind is impaired. These people are supposedly completely lucid and are doing some crazy things while driving. Do they have a death wish. I do not believe that just because a person hits sixteen and can pass the test, they should be able to drive. Of course they are not going to do anything this off while taking the test, one would assume. Not only should the driving age be raised, but some of these drivers need to have a psych. eval. To check their level of anger management, if nothing else. This should not apply to everyone, but some people are obvious road hazards. I for one do not want to be hit by one of them. I think that we should all become snitches for our own safety and the protection of our loved ones. If you see someone doing something that could cause a potential problem, pull over and write down their license plate number. I could not imagine sitting in a courthouse, after some idiot has hit someone that I loved. Being sentenced to live for taking a life, doesn't seem to be enough. What are your thoughts on this matter?

I would never multitask because I know I would be the one to screw up and hurt or kill someone. Driving is a dangerous thing and it is very intimidating to me. I saw a man shaving in his truck last weekend and it blew my mind. I thought how could anyone be that careless? I've read about people doing all kinds of crazy things while driving. Making coleslaw?! Do it before you leave the house. Putting on mascara? Do it before you leave the house, or at least at a stoplight. Need to shave? Do It Before You Leave The House. It's common sense stuff that people can't seem to get through their heads. If it seems dangerous, then don't do it.

I have to comment here...don't even do it at the lights. I had a man roll into me because his foot slipped off the break while he was leaned over trying to find something on the floor. I've nearly missed green lights while someone in front of me is busy doing something and doesn't notice the light has changed.

You're right about that. It's aggravating when someone isn't watching the lights. My husband gets so fed up with people not paying attention at lights.

It was hard for me to believe that story. But, obviously people who do drive have similiar stories. This is a real shame to hear about.

I think its terrible what some people do while driving. My son and I almost got hit by a lady who was too busy laughing on her cellphone and did not notice us at all - I yelled out EXCUSE ME really loudly (she had her window down) and she jumped - she did not even see us - i was ANGRY! I see people talking on their cell phones all the time and I even watched DR Phil the other day and there was a teenager who texts while driving and she doesn't see it as a problem!!! GRRR. Talk about irresponsible.

Yup I have decided to do that after a few near misses. I carry a small notepad with a pen in my bag and the next time it happens to me I am going to report it. Instead of getting angry I'll get remembering his/her license plate and do something about it this time.

This is exactly what I am talking about. This kind of behavior makes my very angry. But, I was never aware that it was so bad. Or that drivers could be so stupid. I really think that we as predestrians need to start taking down license plates and reporting these people. Life does not always give you a second chance to get it right. You and your son could be gone.
