The most important thing with freelance writing is to show your stuff. You need "clips," that is, examples of things you have already written. There are plenty of sites online where you can write to get experience (and get published). Having articles from Associated Content or Helium or unpaid ezines online, as well as smaller unpaid work published in magazines and journals, can serve as your writing samples. Try to get published in smaller journals (even if there is no pay associated with your writing). In this way, you develop a porfolio of writing examples. Your writing will speak for itself.
Therefore, it is important to submit only your best work. If you have a lot of articles that are full of grammar and spelling errors, your value goes down in employer's eyes. Remember, what you put out there (your writing) is who you are to anyone who publishes. They want the best work for their journals, magazines, ezines, etc. Give them the best you have, and you will become a busy freelance writer in no time! Good luck with your writing.

Thank you for these tips :) I, too, am trying to break into freelance writing, or atleast I will be very soon. Right now, I'm working on my first book review that will be published in What If, one of Canada's national teen literary magazines :) I'm more interested in fictional writing than articles, and I've heard that literary magazines are a good place to start :)
