yes, I would find out from the students if there are factors which contribute to sleeping in class. I would find an appropriate discipline to fit the crime. The most important part is that these students are getting the assignments done, with good grades. Maybe staying after school for 15-30 minutes as a discipline.

What factors do you think is the class so that they sleep?
How to stop them sleep?

If there is a reason behind sleeping in class, such as family problems, I would show understanding, but at the same time explain to the students that school is a place for learning, not sleeping.
If the reason is an afterschool job, I would advise the student that learning is important and they need to make an effort to get more sleep and maybe a little less work.
Either way, I think the best way to keep the students awake is to have a very interactive class from the moment class starts. Start the class with a discussion or debate and make sure that the sleepers are participating from the start.
If they find the class dull or boring and not interactive enough, that may be the reason why they are sleeping as well.

First of all, what does your school allow in the way of punishments? Some schools won't allow that. You might try talking to them. Are they working as well as going to school? Are there family problems at home that keep them from getting enough rest? Does you school allow them to bring snacks into the classroom? Maybe they need to bring a cup of coffee or tea to help them keep awake.

wow! corporal punishment !! Hun..there may be a bigger story that you dont know about going on at home..it could be family problems..health problems..and that age alone is stress enough to wipe a child out..or maybe that student has taken on more than they can chew..maybe too many sports or soemthing..I would suggest first talk to the student and find out whats going on with them..and if thats doesnt work bring in the parents,,and talk with them..and if all fails then i woudl go with after school suspension..there very well may be soemthing wrong with why this students feel they arent getting enough sleep..good luck:)

The first thing you can do is to find out why they are sleeping or why they are sleepy in your class... ask other teachers if they are also sleeping in their class... sometimes it can be the fault of the teacher since we (i was also a teacher before) would always assume that students by all means should listen to us no matter what...sometimes students sleep because they want to challenge the teacher to make their lessons more interesting... or they are just too sleepy because they did something the night before....
On the part of the teacher... we should always make our lessons interesting not only to us but also to our students as well... before, i would alwyas think of new and weird ways just to catch their attention...

well, i don't think students must be punished for sleeping in class.. i'm not saying this because i'm a student myself.. however, i can suggest you a solution from a student's point of view..
the only way to keep students from sleeping is to make the class more interactive.. we feel sleepy not because the classes are boring, but because we have to sit there listening on and on.. some of our teachers make us stand up and sit at regular intervals to ensure that we don't doze off.. some make us ask each other questions.. one of our professors has said that he'll be awarding internal marks based on the questions we ask him in class, and he keeps a record of it, and trust me, all these methods have been more than effective in keepin us awake and alert.. n this is what my mom says too, she's also a teacher...
good luck with your class, and my respects:)

I think you should make some test .My history's teacher always make some test to makesure we all not sleep. If we cannot answer her question we will be punish like must stand up until her class finish. And it's working. All of we not sleep in her class anymore and can answer her question and many got good score in exam.
