I work as a secondary school teacher in a multicultural society - predominantly conservative diasporic indian. i don't agree at all with you guys..i have to submit to the pressure of representing that ideal- some things you have to stop doing just because you are a teacher- especially if you are in an multicultural society.( you can't be seen in a park in the open air with your bf behaving very freely- many students will keep eating your brains throughout the year. Also, as i learnt during my courses as well as during practice, students will always copy you- subconsciously, do whatever u want. So, better be a good model. Being a teahcer is a role that you play and everything is always planned- from what you do in class to what you where! Now it does depend on how the person is.I know teachers who are a disgrace but i know others who still inspire kids. Personally i also use that position to make them think out of the box,and what ideally a person should be like- especially in terms of gender, class and race prejudices. Of course, now students are encouraged to think that teachers are no more the perfect in all sphere- all knower and supreme authority. as the relationship changes to a more equal term, the way that the 'ideal' tranmits itself is more subtle... students still seek the advice of the 'young' teachers that they admire- why? because the teacher represents an ideal for them. So, though many teachers may have joined the system involuntarily, out of means or any other reason(it has always been like this) they still do their work as they are asked to and they still feel that they have to represent at least the commonly agreed moral standards...it is like a duty, a social responsibility or social contribution of some kind. Hope i haven't sounded too rude ..but think about it all again.Maybe you will agree..

honestly, i don't think so. i think that the educational system is going down the drain. there are many teachers nowadays who took up teaching when they were in college because they didn't know what to do, or because no other colleges would want them. and because the education department is depleting, the college would just accept substandard students just to fill up the program's requirement. more people talented people nowadays would rather take up nursing because it is the more bankable profession. teaching then has been reduced to a mere scapegoat of those who want to work professionally but could not be taken in by other programs. it is so sad because teachers are supposed to be the models of our children, as our children spend much time in school rather than at home. but we can't do anything about this phenomenon. we are victims.
