How Much Do You Plan to Spend This Holiday Season?

It is only September and I have already started thinking about holiday shopping. I am tired of spending money I don't have on family I only see once or twice a year. I feel a lot of pressure from my family to buy buy buy!
One year, instead of gifts, I gave to charity in all of my family member's names. Can you believe it some where actually upset and thought I was being cheap!
How much do you think is too much to spend on holiday gifts. Do you think it is appropriate to give to charity instead?

Well sometimes people, even our family or relatives do not understand what Holiday Season truly means. It's a time of giving and sharing, for kids to enjoy and have fun opening their presents and an annual gift-giving to those who mostly needs them.
What you did is really amazing, you have a heart that only a few has. I believe that every epople who are somehow blessed share it, that's the true spirit of Christmas.
I don't know if I have something to give my family, but I'll do my best. Besides, it's the thought that counts and not the value!;)

Thanks for the response raijin.
You are right, it is the thought that counts. Maybe I will give baked goods this year along with a charitable contribution. If they are not happy with that, then I think they have their priorities in the wrong g spot.

Just don't worry of what they'll think, you can always give to toher institutions if they are not happy with your contribution!;)

I absolutley think it is appropiate to give to charity on behalf of your family members instead of gifts! Christmas is not about the gifts and i think helping a charity out that is in need is better than receiving a present...or at least that is my opinion. I strickly buy gifts for my immediate family. My husband, 2 children, our mothers & my sister. Those are the people that we spend the holiday season with. We all have an understanding that we buy the adults one gift! The children are the ones who we concentrate on for gifts!!! I always had a great christmas growing up...so my family wants to provide the same for my children.

I am with you! I just want to spend time with my family and friends and exchange meaningful gifts and help others out.

I only buy gifts for my son, husband, his parents, his sister, my parents, nieces, and one of my siblings. My siblings and I draw names. And this year, I actually don't think I am going to participate in the drawing names part. We live so far away that we won't be there to see everyone open presents, so we aren't going to do it this year. I quit working to stay home with our son this year, too, so money is tighter than it has been in the past.
I think that giving to charities is a good idea. I've never done it as a gift, but it is a good idea. I guess some people are just concerned about themselves, though.
I wouldn't spend a bunch of money on people I wasn't close to. If they have a problem with it, oh well.

Yah, I don't think that gift exchanging is very important if you are not there to open the gifts in front of the people who gave you the gift, and vice versa. I like the idea of drawing names, especially with co workers and family you are not that close to.

I love the holidays, I spend way to much during the holidays but I don't regret it. I spend probably $50.00 on my brothers and sister, my mom and dad I'd spend probably $75.00 each and then I spend over $100.00 on my son and my boyfriends daughters. I don't care about the spending of money. Usually I get people a few things that they need like deoderant or shampoo or mittens etc.... and then I will get them something they want. I love to sit around the christmas tree and see their eyes light up kids and adults as they rip open the gifts. Christmas for my family isn't about jesus sorry if that offends anyone. For us it is a time of family. We all have 3 huge meals together and catch up and don't fight and have a good time enjoying each others company. I love it.
As for donating to charity, I do that throughout the year. And I will donate to my local charities I don't donate to large charities because frankly I don't see much help that they give the local folks.

Thanks for the post. I love sitting around the tree and opening gifts, too. I tend to go a little overboard with my imediate family too.

I do not think of money when buying gifts. After all, it is a gift. I do have a certain limit that I spend. Also, I think you giving to charities is a noble thing to do and you are generous - not cheap.

I love to budget so whenever I am shopping I have money in the back of my mind. I love spoiling my little brother and my neice and nephew so I usually have a big budget for that. I budget for three Christmas charities, one for kids, one for animals, one for people with disabilities. I budget a small amount for good friends and then a small amount for family who I don't see very often and I am just shopping for because it is expected.
Sometimes I wish I could be more carefree and not think about money when gift buying but it is ingrained in my personality, I guess. I enjoy setting and staying within budgets. My best friend is more like you, she just picks up whatever she thinks people will like without caring about the cost. I like to shop with her, even though our shopping styles are so different.

Cheap? I cant believe someone would even have the nerve to say that to you especially since you were giving to charity. Its a very nice thing you are doing and i think you should continue to do it. You shouldnt feel pressure to spend money on your family like that. i do buy for my family at christmas but i dont go overboard. I only buy for 5 people and i usually only spend $100 or less all together. I give to charity all through the year.

Thanks for the supportive response. I give throughout the year too so I guess I will just keep on doing it for Christmas, even if the extended family doesn't love it so much.

I think it is nice to give to charity instead.
For some members of my family, because we do a draw bag type gift exchange on both sides, the family gift is one of the few gifts they receive, so it's kind of important to get them a present they can unwrap. Just a traditional thing. And we really only buy one gift, because each person draws one name and buys a gift for that person. I also get gifts for my sisters and my parents, but my siblings and I all club together and get one gift for my parents.
But on my husband's side of the family, everyone gets so many gifts that this year my husband and I are going to try to scale back - we're going to give fewer gifts, and try to talk his mom into buying fewer gifts.

I like the idea of drawing names for gifts. I tried to talk my family into that one year but they were not receptive. Maybe someone else willbring it up this year.

I just like buying gift, but I don't have any pressure on it from my family.
I don't think I will be able to spend as much as did last year, because we are expecting a baby, so money will go in that more lol. I don,t also except big gift from my family and it,s ok like that.
I think it,s great to also give to charity during christmas. But you don,t have to give money. Only food can be good. As for me, I give all year long. They take .50cents on every paycheck and that's how give :)

I like to give to my immediate family, my parents and brother and boyfriend. I just don't want to spend $25 on a gift card for a second cousin I haven't seen since last Christmas. I would much prefer to give that money to charity.

I am thinking I will spend $200 this year. I would rather work hard at finding the deals than put my family in debt. I think the whole Christmas season has become all about gifts and not about the spirit of sharing.

$200 is a good budget. I have been saving all of my online earnings and I will use that for my budget this year.

I don't think I will spend some money this year for a holiday, since I plan to have a big trip holiday for nest year. So I think it would be better to keep this year budget then combine it for next year holiday. Also will not shop a lot for this year holiday season, just do the cheap budget this year.
