My cat is going on 12 and he's still very active and healthy. Some people have told me cats live for about 15 years, but my neighbor's cat lived to be 22. Does anyone know the average expectancy?

I have a friend with an 18 yr old cat. I think it really depends on many factors, we have a 14 yr old cat that doesn't act as young as the 16 yr old one acts, but we are 100% sure about the age of the 14 yr old one, & were only told the 16 yr old was 10 when we got her 6 yrs ago. That's not to say she doesn't look old, so we know she's in her teens somewhere.

Hi...
I really think that a cat will live a very long time as long as he/she is well taken care of and if you're lucky enough to have a healthy cat.
I had a cat called Sprite (who passed away last year at 20 years old). She developed a heart problem when she was 12 years old. So I kept up with all her medications and vet appointments and she lived another 8 years.
Then again, I had a cat called Amadeus who only lived a few months because the lady we adopted him from was a cat lady. One of the cats she tried to help brought feline leukemia into her colony. And it ended up spreading throughout her house.
One tip though, make sure you don't let your kitty get overweight. One reason Sprite ended up with her heart problem was when I worked as a live-in nanny my parents took care of her and her sister (Moxie) for me. They ended up feeding them 4 times a day. Just double feeding them... And they became obese. Moxie ended up with diabetes and Sprite hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
Hope all goes well with your cat...

We had a cat that lived to be 15. I think it just depends on the cat. Human life expectancy is around 80 years old, but my husbands great grandmother is going to be 106 in november. If the cat is healthy it could live to be 15 or more years old. Just enjoy it while you have it.

Hi megumiart,
I have been told that an average cats life expectancy is between 12 to 15 years. An indoor cat would have a far greater chance of living to a ripe old age. Unfortunately outdoor cats are exposed to cars, diseases, fighting, poison's etc and this does reduce their life expectancy.:(
