Why You Aren't Making Any Money from Your Blog

I haven't been on myLot long but I've seen quite a few people asking how to make more money (or any money at all) from their blogs. I've followed a lot of the links and looked at the blogs. Here are the main reasons you guys aren't making money from them:
1. You're blogging about anything and everything under the sun.
The way to create a blog that makes money is to *focus on one subject*. Become known as the expert in that niche. It's okay to have a blog that is a diary or journal, but don't make that the site you're trying to make money from. Pick one subject for your new blog and stick with it. That way people will learn to come to you when they need help with that topic.
2. You're trying to make money by telling people how to make money.
Some people have picked a niche, but it's the wrong one.
First off, this whole how-to-make-money-online niche is waaaaay over-saturated. That means there's tons of competition, so it's hard to stand out, and it's hard to get visitors.
Second, it's hard to come off as credible if you can't actually do what you're telling other people to do.
Instead, pick a niche about something you love and know something about and focus on that. It could be anything from knitting to gardening to raising kids to breeding dogs. Yes, there is money being made right now on blogs that cover those subjects!
3. You're not creating content that helps people.
Always remember that random people who visit your site from all over the world don't care about you! They're looking for something that helps THEM.
So to keep their interest, tell people how to do something, how to install something, how to solve a problem, what they should do when they visit your city, whatever! Just give valuable information in your blog posts. This will make people want to visit again and again.
4. You don't have any visitors
You have to get visitors (AKA traffic) to your site in order to make money from Adsense, affiliate programs, or anything else. There are lots of ways to get traffic (just creating the quality content I've talked about helps you get links naturally), but you do have to put some time into it. Comment in other people's blogs (good comments, not spammy just-come-to-my-site comments) and leave a link. Use a signature with a link to your site in any message boards you participate in (for best results, join forums related to what your site is about), put a signature with your link in all your emails. There are lots of ways to promote your site. Don't be afraid to get creative!
5. Your blog is only two months old!
You don't have to labor at your blog day in and day out to make money, but if you want to make good money, you have to see this as a marathon, not a sprint. Blogging is NOT a good way to "get quick rich." However, it IS a good way to grow a source of passive income that will make you money even when you're not working on it. This takes time though. Don't expect a lot your first 6 months. Rewards come to those who stick with their blogs, regularly adding content and regularly working on getting visitors.

P.S. I make a living creating blogs and websites on home and garden subjects. I've got a podcast at the link above where I'm giving away my secrets. :)

Excellent advice! I started a blog once and had stuff all over the place. I pulled up my site one day at work to see if I had any visitors. While scrolling thru my blog I came to the conclusion "what the he-- is she talking about?"
Then I realized it was my blog! Talk about a reality check. I closed it down that same day and started from scratch. You are soooo right on the "making money" issue. There are so many people desperate to make money they will do anything. Believe me, I know. I sure hope people take your advice.

Haha, I think it's fine to have a place where you just toss out whatever is in your mind. Those types of sites just don't work the best for making money. :)
