Are you comfortable working alone? Or do you prefer have people around while your are working?
Well, I'm posting this because I, myself, am not very comfortable working with many people around me. I can concentrate better with my work when I'm alone and the environment is quiet. Though, sometimes, I need some colleagues to consult regarding work related concerns but I think I'm better off inside my cubicle and that no one will interrupt when I am focused on in a particular task. This is because I easily get distracted and when I'm already distracted its difficult for me to jump back on what I'm previously doing.

I prefer working alone and this not only means that I don’t like too many people around me, but I am not a very ‘group person’ either. Too many people around me creating a buzz like a beehive, distracts me and people passing comments loudly or chatting continuously does make me very irritated and jittery. I tend to make silly mistakes in whatever I am doing. Another of my pet peeves is when people will just hang aroud and stare at your computer screen, trying to read what you are doing! I find it so rude and ill-mannered you know. As to the second part, they say that all virgoes are ‘perfectionists’ and I am no exception. I am not bragging and to me, this is more of a bane than a boon. Just because I don’t like most of what others do and people know that I love doing my own work myself without any help, they just dump loads on me and walk away. They know that my part will be done impeccably and probably some more too, as I just cant tolerate people coming and taking up from where I left off and then spoiling the whole beauty of the work done! I would rather finish it off myself if I could. And this habit of mine has landed me in other kinds of trouble as well. Loads dumped on me I can tolerate but there were instances where people actually thought I was trying to please the boss by taking on extra load! What a ruckus that created and it definitely hurt me deep inside. For quite sometime I promised myself that I would not do more than my brief asked for, but as you know…old habits die hard!

Thank you for your very sensible response! I can easily relate to your experiences like making mistakes when there so many people chatting or making noise around me. I'm more comfortable staring at the computer and sharing my thoughts in discussions like this, than joining the chat of my colleagues. Sometimes, I think that I'm becoming anti-social but then I have friends from inside the office too but we usually go out if we want to chat or enjoy each other's company.

Same here, I just cant go out with a gang just because everybody is going. I need to be with people whose company I genuinely enjoy. And no, we are not anti-socials we are just being true to ourselves and the world and we are better off than the pretenders who seem to make ‘friends’ with one and all with equal ease.

I AM VERY MUCH COMFORTABLE WHILE WORKING ALONE!
Well it does not mean that I dont like to work with more people: I also can work with a team and follow the team work and spirit too!
But at the same time I have my analysis that when ever I have worked alone, the work has got the real touch!
Because I am little more aware about the thing what I am giving and so I am careful naturally! I dont compromise with my self and so work has its real touch!

i do feel comfortable working alone. in fact,i prefer working alone in my office rather that being with people, not that i don't like people because actually my work is very people-oriented.it's just that when i work, i want to of course do it by myself, except for the times when we have to do teamwork or cooperative work for our clients. Most times, i'm alone in the office and i'm happy being that. i guess my colleagues from the other offices understand this and they have left me pretty alone with myself as they don't call me anymore for their regular "cultural/obligatory" eating or chatting sessions. i'm not a talker anyway and sometimes i feel that it's just a waste of my time. there are times when i do feel that i'm being alienated, but that's okay with me as i don't feel the pressure of having to please anyone. i'm comfortable being alone and as long as i am doing my job well, that's all that matters most.

It depends on my work...if pressure is there then I would rather work alone if not...I would like to work while listening to music...it's really fun.

I agree with u as i'm a very easily distracted person. When i'm working or doing things,i dun like to be disturbed. Once i'm being disturbed, i'll be very frustrated. But when i'm working alone, i feel like i have all the freedom and privacy to myself..

I love working alone. Most of the jobs I have had ended up with me working alone. There were people around me but no one to bother me. Somehow I always got my job done fast and would end up doing repair work which put me in an area where I was alone. Pretty soon this area became my permanent work place. I did get to bring a radio into my work area.

I can work either way. The only thing that upsets me is if someone makes a mess in my area. So I wouldn't mind working on my own so I didn't have to clean up after others. LOL I get enough of that at home, it gets tiring doing it at work also. But I just stay quiet and clean up. So I get along pretty well with others.

Yes, I'm comfortable working alone. That's because I'm independent-minded and don't need supervision.
Don't get me wrong. I'm very capable of getting along with other people and being a team player. It's just that I work best when I'm allowed to develop my own style.

I work better with people. Depends on the job I am doing but most times unless I am personally creating a project, I prefer to work with people.

I am just as easily distracted as you are, michecu.
That is why when I work on things
that are sensitive in nature and needs concentration, I would work them at night when everbody is asleep to include my wife. But there are times that I have to do my work in the presence of others which would still be alright so long as they observe silence and provide my coffee.

It is alright to work alone so as to keep up with the concentration you put in your work though it is healthy also to be working with others, having professional discussions regarding work related issues and through that, you may be able to learn.
You may just try not to get distracted easily, it's part of our lives, you can just get back to your particular task when you are done with other various tasks.

I prefer to be independent, but I don't work alone, because, well, who would I teach if I were by myself?
But when I am working on a project, writing worksheets, or editing others' work, I prefer to be alone. I work more efficiently this way.

We both have the same attitude towards work. I easily get distracted when I have company. I prefer to work alone, because I'm more productive and comfortable with that. That's why I'm not good when I have to work with others. I tend to be unproductive.

This may sound kinda weird but I like working by myself while there are people around. My productivity is much better and it saves me time when I have a question. It also does away with that 'being all alone' feeling that you get after working for 12 years by yourself.
Great question!

In my case... i can work alone or amidst people around... i like the distraction because it makes me think of more creative ideas... quiet time works for me when i am not in the mood to talk to people while working... this has always been the case for me even when i was still studying in highschool...
