i was having this discussion with a friend at school just a minute ago, and he said its possible to kill a guard by shooting an arrow in his head, killing him instantly. anyone know if he's right?

You can! if you sneak and your level is expert (like mine lol) that ignores armour and you have better than journeyman archery level then an arrow in any npc's head will kill it/him/her.
