I read a news story today that mentioned that the :-) turns 25 today. A professor at Carnegie Mellon states that he was the first one to use the smiley face emoticon and the rest is history.
Do you think future generations will be debating the origins, or do you think with successive technologies will make the emoticon smiley a nostalgic mark of the past, just like the "Have a Nice Day" smiley of the 60s/70s.
I know, a strange question, but what do you all think?

Belated happy birthday to Smiley :-) then. I have always liked smiley ever since I was in high school. Today it has even more popularized by internet like yahoo messenger and other messengers and even on the SMS it is very, very uselful. There's even a collection of them now.
I'm not a good analyst in anything but I do hope for Smiley longer existence as it has brighten many a man's days. Sometimes I don't get a long letter from my boyfriend but if it contains a smiley, it's more than enough to make my day happy.
It's just a little thing but little things mean a lot.

THanks for the response!
I think it also makes life easier telling us what "tone of voice" someone is using :)

Hello houndsgood, I never really known who invented or who started the smiley face in messages such as letters, note, text, etc.. Well, thanks to him we have such icons that we used to express what we feel after a certain sentence or note. Eversince I have started using the computer for internet surfing, email and chatting I have always used the smiley face emoticon.
This emoticons are really very useful to people specially when sending messages with people your corresponding with. You can express how you feel by putting in certain types of emoticons on your text. I think its become a habit for most of us to use it often times.
I don't think smiley will become a nostalgic mark of the past. For one even young kids today starting to use the computer for chatting or mobile phones for text messaging are using smileys. It has made it mark in history and people will still go on using it in the future. I think it will only continue to improve and people will just think of other things to add to it.
