When was the last time you actually took pen in hand and sat down to write a letter? With sending e-mail being as popular as it has become, I am afraid the art of writing letters will die out. I used to write letters often to family and friends who lived out of state. Some of the reasons I no longer do it is because Ihave lost contact with some; some have passed on; and I have gotten lazy about actually writing with pen and paper. I think I will try and locate a few penpals like in the old days so that I can polish my letter-writing skills, lol.

When you get right down to it, elicBxn, I think that even typewritten letters are better than electronic ones!

I have been an Ebay dealer since 2003, and every person that has bought from me (over 300)I have sent a "Thank You" letter along with their items, not just a tiny note. I have received many emails telling me they never had such good personable service. You are totally correct in saying writing letters is dying out. I never realized how important it still is to people until I received such good feedback on it. So, I keep on doing it and I'm making everyone happy, including myself. Good question.

What a kind and thoughtful person you are, Kashmeresmycat! I worry so much that future generations will come to rely only on technology. Handwritten missives should not just be a thing of the past. That is why I am going to start immediately to write letters again.

Well, Calais, a letter is a letter! I recently nearly came undone because I had to write a letter to the postmaster of my local post office.(:

The last time I took a pen and write a letter was sometime third week of August 2007--that's about a month now. I sent a birthday card to my boyfriend and although emails and ecards are readily available, free, and faster I still prefer sending him a card by snail mail. With that card he gets to see my handwriting and I get to write his name and mine myself.
Although I don't send letters only but occasionally, I still send cards to my friends who are far from me. I think they still matter today. I also still get cards from the post and the thrill is still there. It's so much fun than receiving emails because I can go back and reread it anytime I want.

Absolutely, Jemina! I have always loved receiving and sending mail. I used to write love letters for a male friend of mine who had met a girl in Kentucky. I would write letters for anyone that asked me.

I actually have a couple of pen-pals that I write postal mail to on a monthly basis. I just love getting real mail in my mail box, email is nice for staying in touch & quick messages; but it can't replace real mail for me.
If you can't find your old pen-pals there are several yahoo groups for finding pen-pals.

Thank you very much, eden. I will get on that soon. When I think back, I did get a lot of pleasure from this pursuit.

You have the right idea, kitty. I would hate to see the art of letter writing become lost. There is nothing so personal as a handwritten letter or note.

Lol well I would say a good 20 years ago after that I gave up writing all together and I have only been on the Computer for 3 years I never knew anything about it till then as I was working so many hours and then when I came home it was my Childrens time and cleaning up as the Ex Husband never did any of that he was on the Computer in Chat rooms
It was only him I used to write letters to in them Days anyway so it must be 20 years since I wrote a Letter and then stopped as he never replied when he was away with the Forces

I just set down today and wrote a letter to a friend who doesn't have a computer and so it is impossible not to write to them.
I think that it is sad that people don't write anymore as it is much more personal than an email. I don't like eards either as I feel that a real card is much more personal and I think that it makes the reciever feel that you cared enough about them to take time out of your day to locate them a card.

I havent wrote a real letter in years. I occasionally send cards with a note in them. I cant remember the last letter i wrote even. Maybe I'll write to my mom tonight. It's just so much easier to call.

I just finished writing an aplication letter! Well, not a real one because it was for my English clases. But I wrote it. It had to be a 120-180 words letter and so I sat there and invented a new me and started writing. I applied for a job as a helper in a summer camp...

I am fond of writing letters. It is where I can release all emotions that I can not utter in words. But its been ages since the last time i did it. But I still love doing it especially during especial occasions. And when my husband works abroad, I usually send him a letter if he can not make it online or even text because of his location.

Writing letters is so more personal I think. I have some penpals that I still sit down and right too. To me it just shows that you care about them, because it does take longer to write a letter in your own writing then tuping an email.

It has been a long time since I sat down to write a letter and I must admit that I find it hard to write, as I normally use the computer. I found a very interesting book that talks about letter writing of all types and even includes letters written by famous people. The name of the book is "For the love of letters: a 21st century guide to the art of letter writing" and I am now waiting for the copy I bought in Amazon to arrive!

The last time I wrote a letter was to my mother when I was living in Samoa. That would be about 4-5 years ago. She always wrote me letters and I often wrote back. Now that she owns a cellphone and knows how to text, she texts to me instead.

to tell you the truth writing letters will not go out of style. Everyone doesn't have a computer or a cell phone. Even though you can go to the library and have access to these things. Writing is how it is all done. If the electricity went out for a week and there was only writing a letter to communicate. Everyone would be writing letters and the horse and cart would be back in business. With the electricity our the electrical gas pumps would not work. I like the keyboard cause what i have to say i can type faster than i write. Yet still writing is how work is still done even before it's put to computer screen.
