I live in hurricane alley ..
So.. I have in the closet
(1) tote w/
Towels, paper plates, plastic cups, trash bags, plastic forks/spoons/knifes, hand sanitizer, first aid kit, all kind of batteries, all important documents, paper towels matches, and lighters
(1) Tote with all non perishable food
(1) tot w/ games and stuff to keep us occupied if the electric goes out
I rotate the food out every mth so that it doesn't go bad.
With Jeanne,Francis, and Charlie we were out of power for 1-2 weeks each time.

I usually keep a lot of different things on hand in case of emergency weather conditions hit us unaware. Where I live, it has happened that due to snow the whole roads been closed for almost a week! If I know a storm is coming I will usually stock up on eggs, bread and sandwich meat. I keep a stock of canned goods. I keep extra bread, milk, butter (in the freezer), as well as portions of meat that will thaw quickly. If the weathers bad, and I don't have electricity, I have a propane gas grill that I can make any kind of food on, so I'm pretty well set for emergencies of any kind.

I live in an area where we've had nor'easters, ice storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, you name it. When it comes to preparing for storms I always buy canned goods that keep well and can be prepared easily, bottled water, emergency candles, batteries for radio/flashlights and have a camp stove to heat up food, etc.
