Why do they have to be so naggy???

I'm talking about the subject of upselling. I think one of the original nag tactics was "you want fries with that?" But now it's everywhere and you just can't get out of a store without being nagged! If you buy two more of those you get one free, if you buy one more of these they'll be only $5 each instead of $7 each, if you spend $10 more you can buy this $50 tote bag for only $3, save room for dessert, a bigger soda is only 7 cents more surely you want the bigger one, would you like to open a charge account today, blah blah blah. And the latest one was when I picked up my prescription from Walgreen's today and the pharmacist actually said to me "will you buy a package of these Hershey's kisses so I can win a contest?" I was like "dude, just gimme my pills and let me outta here". I realize it's a sales tactic to get people to buy more or bigger stuff so that the company will make more money but GAWD it's annoying. I'm waiting for the doctor to start upselling me on extra blood tests and exams. Am I the only one annoyed by this? Where have you been lately where they nagged the crap out of you?

I think it is annoying as well, BUT it is the persons job. I have worked in management in fast food, and at a convenience store. The company's have a policy on up selling. The convenience store I managed sent around mystery shoppers to see if everyone was up selling. You got a grade. If you did not up sell you got docked points. If you continually got caught not up selling you could lose your job,.

Oh I know. I do mystery shopping and have learned that it's part of the training and that they have to do it and I'd have to report them if they didn't upsell. It's just so darn annoying that you can't get out of anywhere these days without being nagged. I'd feel bad if I worked at these places and had to bug people all the time.

Disclaimer: I don't blame you one bit for being irritated by this. The issue is that a lot of these places require employees to upsell. It's even worse in call centers (I've worked in several) when Quality Assurance standards dictate doing it and PUNISH employees for not. If they are recorded letting people off the line without suggesting a faster Internet connection speed or adding HBO and Cinemax for an additional five dollars a month for six months, they can be threatened with termination. In settings like fast food, there is a general rule that works about ninety percent of the time (at least it's been my experience). Place your order all at once so you aren't interrupted and finish your order saying, "That will be all." It's usually a clear message that you don't wish to be upsold and if you get your order out in one breath, sounding like you are decisive in the first place, it's harder to do it anyway. This CAN work with call centers, too. Whenever I call my cable company, my cellular provider or any other concern, I will usually begin the conversation with something like, "I'm calling to discuss a technical/billing/other problem and wish for the conversation to remain on that subject for the duration of this call. I do not wish to make or discuss any changes or upgrades to my service. Agreed?" Usually they respond in the affimative and respect the request. Doing that also helps the employee by defusing QA situations when it comes time to review the call. Most of them don't like having to do it any more than you like to listen to it.

wow thats interesting and to be honest, I hadn't really thought about doing it that way with call centers and the like. I do try to remember to have my order ready for drive-thru and as I am going down the list of what everyone wants, I try hard to remember to say 'That is all' so that I don't get upsold anything. And that is no small feat when you have 6 people in the van LOL Thanks for the tip.

Oh, yeah, I find this really frustrating. It seems like no matter what you buy, people are always trying to sell you more. It's hard to feel like going into a store and buying something, because you know you're going to have to say no, thank you, about 5 times to get out of there.

Yup, it seems to be really bad at the fast food places but it is cropping up everywhere. Like they aren't getting enough of your money already. I just want to get in, buy what I need and leave. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I have to agree with your. Its VERY annoying. It used to basically only be with fast food places that i noticed. If you only got a sandwich they would ask if you would like fries or something to drink with it. I was at the grocery store the other day and they did this. They had a basket (the cashier) with something in it. And of course they were trying to sell it. They were like its only 1.99! Wouldnt you like a couple? I was like no thank you. Then they proceed to keep trying! What gets so annoying to me is when you say no you mean no. So did you end up buying the hershey kisses?

Any fast food restaurant I've been to in recent years have done this annoying upsell thing. More recently if they say "Do you want a drink with that?" or "Do you want a large meal?" I snap back "If I wanted a drink with it/large meal, I've have asked for it ok!" Then I smile sweetly to lessen the venom LOL! This only tends to happen to me in fast food places (which I go to less and less these days) and cheap stores like this shop near me which sells childrens clothes. I have a few friends whose kids have had birthdays recently and have been there a few times to buy various gifts, the shop has a range of what I call "crap that no one buys" at the counter and they only try to force it on you like "Do you want a 500ml moisturiser for just £X?" Even when you say no politely they try again, "It's half the normal price!" Sometimes I just repeatedly say no, sometimes I say "Of course it's half price, it's probably like paint stripper, no one's buying it so you're trying to palm it off onto me, no THANKS!" They usually get the message then LOL!

I had to chuckle when I read this. Wonderful discussion subbject by the way. My hubby and I are always talking about this 'upselling' and it seems to be the way of society. Many times when going through a drive-thru, we have been asked, 'Would you like fries or an apple pie today?' and my husband always says, 'If I had wanted that, I would have asked for that' And that brings back the old Jeff Foxworthy skit where he talks about the drive-thrus and their upselling of items. Even in a store these days, you get asked, 'Is that all?' And I feel like saying 'good grief people, I just spent almost $200 here for groceries and diapers---what more do you think I need' LOL It gets so blessed aggrivating. And that upselling is really appealing to kids and when you have your kids with you it makes it even worse...Of course, this world seems to revolve around the almighty dollar so I am sure we are just in for more of the same--makes me wonder if 20-30 years ago, how much this upselling really happened?

Hi buggheart! I use to hate upselling stuff when I worked at Wendy as a teenager. I felt like if people want something other than what they order than they will order it. I use to always get in trouble for not upselling. They started this free combo promo if the cashier did not offer to biggie size a combo then the customer got to a free combo. I have only got caught not upselling twice I was really careful then because I wanted a free lunch at Wendy's employees ate for half price. It is a marketing thing to make people aware of what they have. Certain psycologist believe that people need to hear things 3 times for things to really register....I say whatever. If I want it I'll buy all the talking in the world is not going to change me.

Yeah, sometimes it's pretty ridiculous. The pharmacist one is pretty funny though. I mean, I expect when I shop during the holidays that I'm gonna get "open a charge account" requests. And if I go to a fast food place they're going to offer me something else... fries, pie, whatever. Hell when the Schwans man comes he always tells me what's on sale and tries to upsell me on those. Heck, when I worked at McDonalds I was the queen of the upsell. I remember once we introduced new pies (cherry) and the drive thru and front counter were competing to see who could sell the most in 1 night. I was taking orders in drive thru and actually greeted people with "Welcome to McDonalds would you like to try our new cherry pie today?" But I don't want my pharmacist trying to get me to buy anything but what I need.
