I believe many people do enjoy aesthetics that give them a sense of history and culture. I also believe that in many cases, they are a good way to enhance cultural appreciation in people, particularly young people who are used to being confined to textbooks and boring lectures, which their teachers and professors often turn into political sermons. When people are exposed to real-life experiences, it can really be educational and better allow them to develop their own perspectives, and is an influence more valuable than any classroom lesson.
As for learning a traditional classical dance form, I believe that enhances your learning potential and expands your world even further - along with instilling within you the discipline and passion and sense of pride and accomplishment that comes from learning a new skill and demonstrating it to people... something which will come in useful in life regardless of your career path. And when you can identify with it on a historical and cultural level, it makes it even better.
I do not believe that arts should fully take the place of academics. However, I believe that they serve as a good compliment to the academic lessons, and you should at least consider opening yourself up in that regard. Whether or not traditional dance forms are appreciated will be answered very differently depending on who you ask and is a rather rhetorical question. However, yes, I do think they are necessary both to provide a creative and disciplinary outlet for people's energies and to preserve the history and culture of its respective origins.

I think that traditional classical dance forms can give us a sense of history, and of the past, and that is always valuable. Knowing where we came from is helpful in heading new directions, and can actually inspire new forms of creativity, because once you know the rules, you can make choices about how (and when) to break them!
