Amtrak in the US isn't that great (or so I have heard), so I have never traveled on it. However, last summer I took the train in Canada from Windsor, ONT to Brockville, ONT. I had to switch trains in Toronto. The trains in Canada are super nice and really, really comfortable.

Amtrak in the US isn't that great - that's the understatement of the century! I travelled from Philadelphia to Orlando by Amtrak about 4 years ago and it was the trip from H*LL! The seats were vry uncomfortable and there was no leg room. The toilets were backed up less than two hours after we started out. There were long stretches of time when the diner car wasn't open and you couldn't even get a drink of water. The one car's air conditioning was broken (not ours) and it was the one with the passengers who were going all the way to Miami. When we got to our Condo in Orlando my husband called and complained about our horrible experience and we got our money back for our return trip and flew home. The only good thing about it was it was what got my son-in-law to agree to fly! We took the train initially because he was terrifed of flying, but we really also thought it would be a fun experience...LOL...but he blamed himself for all of our misery and didn't say a word when we informed him we were flying home. I'll remember if we ever get to Canada that your trains are better.

Actually I live across the border with Canada in Metro-Detroit. I was actually traveling to upstate NY, but its easier and faster to travel through Canada than around the lakes. I crossed the border at the Detroit-Windsor border, jumped the train to Brockville and then crossed the border again at the Prescott-Ogdensburg border back in to the US.

The only time I've ever been on trains is the New Jersey Transit train and the Long Island Railroad. When I go up and visit friends and we go places we usually take the public transit trains. plus it's a much easier way to get to nyc. To stop in jersey and take a train! I went to NYC for new years this past year and we stayed on Long Island (cheaper) and took the train over to NYC every day.

I traveled by train last weekend. It was funny. The train I was on was bound for Edinburgh, then half way they announced in was going to Glasgow! It turned out it changed destination because it was over one hour late.
I have traveled on Amtrak before as well. My train arrived at midnight as it was running five hours late. They provided me with a free half an hour taxi ride to the town I was staying in Wow! It was not so nice arriving in Los Angeles at that sort of time. Amazingly I got a bus on from there at that late hour of the night.
I love traveling by train. The train route in Europe is excellent. I think Australia has some superb long train trips. New Zealand has a few gems like the Trans Alpine one traveling from Christchurch to Greymouth. I went on a train in Kenya and saw a giraffe out of the window at breakfast time.

The last trip I took a train was in Japan, from Tokyo to Kyoto by bullet trian. That was a marvellous experience. The train was so fast travelling about 200 miles per hour. The seats were very comfortable, and the service on the train was excellent too. It was like flying on a train !
Amazing trip.

I like to travel by train. We have ancient train made by Garmany (1889). The train still run well. The train use wood as the power. We have to pay for about 2000 usd to use the train. And the train will bring me go around to see beautiful scenary of Mounth Merapi!

I have travelled on some of the Amtrak routes before and the trains are usually late !!!
I also travelled from Toronto to Vancouver on the Canadian train which was a very nice and memorable journey. That was back in about 1982, I expect things have changed a lot since then.

I travel by train a lot. It's more convenient for me than the bus because I can go to the bathroom despite my wheelchair and it's cheaper than the plane. I only take planes when I'm going further than Washington D.C. I suppose I could take the train all the way across the country because as I said I can use the bathroom on trains and also plug in my chair as Amtrak has outlets available for public use. The only thing I need to do is find someone who is crazy enough to undertake this adventure with me.
I hear that Canadian trains are better than ours but I'm not surprised given that most of their things are better than ours, but still the train is the best choice for me to travel with long distances in America. I've taken a survey of all the transits you can take in this country, and this is my conclusion.

I have traveled by Amtrak from Utah to Maryland. The trains change in Chicago. The trains in the East are run down, dirty, and not well kept, but the superliners are amazing. They are double decked and clean and VERY comfortable. I don't like that the food is astronomical in price, so I bring a small cooler for myself.

No I haven't experienced that yet. But I love traveling and I plan to do the train trip in Europe sometime when I could afford to. I don't drive and I think I could see a lot of things during the train ride even though I have heard that the trains are not really nice and comfortable there (well, I will have to find out), but I think it would be more interesting.
