As a kid my goldfish always died after a couple months, but my aunt has kept her goldfish alive and extremely healthy-looking for three years!

The last goldfish we had (a feeder fish won at a fair) lived about a year. The longest I have ever had a goldfish live (this was a feeder fish too) was 6 years. It got to be about 4 lbs and lived in a 40 gallon tank (largest fish in the tank).

Even goldfish have certain requirements to be able to live healthy lives, that is up to 35 years. Number one is that people put them in too small a tank (bowl) that is not cycled. Since fish give off waste materials including ammonia the waste materials will pollute the water and often kill the goldfish (or any other kind of fish that is not put into a cycled tank). There are certain bacteria that will eat this ammonia and turn it into nitrite. Nitrite is also harmful to fish. Another group f bacteria will eat this nitrite and turn it into nitrate which is not too harmful to fish. It takes time to get these bacteria to grow in an aquarium. Another thing that people do is to put too many fish into too small a tank. (they think that since the fish are not running into each other there is plenty of room) That is like saying that you can put several people in a closet and keep them there without letting them out. Another ting that people do is to overfeed the fish. The fish will eat some of the excess food but the rest will go to to the bottom and be eaten by the bacteria which uses oxygen and gives off carbon dioxide. Fish need oxygen (just like us humans and all animals)and so the fish will suffocate.

The record for me is probably eight to nine years. And they got HUGE.
I really believe goldfish have a high mortality rate for the following reasons
- Initial health. If they came from a pet store or previous owner where they were in poor conditions sometimes
- People just don't treat them like they are regular fish. They put them in a little bowl and neglect to add stress coat when they are putting them in or when changing their water.
- they use bleach to clean their bowl
- they fail to give them a home large enough to grow in
- they don't protect them from sudden temperature change
