What's your basketball team called? Why is it called that way?
My college basketball team, for instance, is the De La Salle Green Archers. As to whether I know why our school selected Archers to represent it in collegiate basketball competitions, to be honest, the answer presently escapes me.
If I were to make an outlandish guess, though, I would say that perhaps our school picked Archers because we had a great Archery team before, and choosing it to represent our basketball team is probably one way of giving recognition or honor to such a great team.
The color green, on the other hand, is simply our school color.

UP Fighting Maroons. I know, maroon is more commonly known as a color... why the heck did they name a basketball team like that? I'm sure most people would also scratch their heads and wonder, why is the UP team called the Maroons? Because maroon and green are the school colors? This was my initial assumption too. Although I thought there should be something more to that than just the school colors, because they could've easily named the team UP Fighting Greens as well (now that doesn't sound good).
I found out recently that the word "maroon" actually pertains to runaway slaves. And UP students are Maroons who try to run away from the status quo by trying to make things better. As for the "Fighting," it was probably added to the monicker because of the competitive spirit that we have.
Admittedly though, during the recently-concluded UAAP Season 70, I didn't feel that our men's basketball team was fighting at all. Our women's basketball team fought to the end though. But that's beside the point.

That's truly a fascinating piece of info, cham. To be honest, prior to your enlightening post, I likewise easily assumed that your team's name merely represents your school color.
Thanks to your post, I now better understand why you're known as the UP Fighting Maroons and, to my mind, such is a pretty accurate description of UP students. ;)
Even if, as you've recognized, your men's basketball team didn't perform as expected this year, as host next year, I strongly feel that it would just be fitting for them to redeem themselves.
If it's any consolation, though, your tantalizing UP Pep Squad ended UST's championship streak and your lady Fighting Maroons gave the Ateneo Lady Eagles a very good fight.
Thanks a lot for your great post and Happy myLotting!;)
