What had been one of TV's best kept secrets isn't so much of a secret anymore! MSNBC's Countdown With Keith Olbermann is starting to make some real noise in the ratings and its host is starting to finally get the recognition he's long deserved. The current issue of The Nation (www.thenation.com) contains an article by Martin Kitman that does a much better job of reviewing the show and its host than I could but I will say Kitman's right on in saying Olbermann is changing the face of news. You don't have to agree with him on the issues to recognize his talent or his passion not to mention the fact that he does his homework very thoroughly. The "alphabet soup" networks would be wise to to take note of Keith's brand of reporting and analyzing the news. He manages to make the top stories of the day entertainng and interesting and he speaks TO us, the viewers now DOWN to us. There is humor to lighten things up instead of a full hour of doom and gloom, and when he's giving his opinion you KNOW it's his opinion not something disguised as objective reporting.
Keith's "Special Comments" have been the highlight of this show on several occasions and, as I said, you may not agree with him but you can't deny his passion and conviction. I'm an admitted lefty so I tend to agree with much - if not ALL - of what he says but this format would work with a conservative host as well. It worked back in the day of Ed Murrow, before news anchors were supposed to have no opinion; in the Murrow air Fulton Lewis Jr. and Walter Winchell were also on the air.
Could I suggest to any of you who haven't seen Countdown to give it a try and tune in? Hey, you righties can either DVR O'Reilly (Keith's champion "Worse Person in the World at the moment) or catch him on the reruns later! Just check the show out and I dare you to me you didn't find it both informative and entertaining!

Olbermann is a buffoon. He rants and raves to his tiny audience and he's just virulently anti-Bush, that is his sole talking point. He's a joke if you ask me.

I have heard much about Keith Olbermann, anniepa, however I am not in a position to comment on his newscast since I don't subscribe to cable tv. I do feel that it is refreshing to know that there is another voice out there other than the constant bombardment that is being aired in the mainstream media and conservative talk radio.

His show is definitely refreshing. I know there are many people who can't really get interested in watching an ordinary newscast but this is different. Things are really explained in a way that everyone can understand and relate to, not in a condescending way but just kind of like if you're chatting with a friend. I'm glad to see the ratings are really improving lately; I just read in the same article in The Nation that I wrote about that MSNBC is "ratings challenged" but I think that's because there are still alot of cable companies that don't offer it and many have just recently started to carry it. We've only had it for a few years now, I know I didn't get it in 2000 because I was so mad because MSNBC was following the Florida recount county by county and no one else was keeping it up to date. My daughter got it on satellite at time and she kept calling me with updates. Until the Supremes decided to call the election, that is...

I can feel your passion for him, but I will pass on watching his show. Whenever I even see a small segment of it I feel a little puke in my mouth.
