I understand how you feel as i experienced too being stranger in a city i am in years ago. I left home just to look for a good career right after college, I can't stop myself missing my mom and friends and the place i grown. But have to move on, otherwise i will not be having a bright future. I tried to gain friends at work but really hard as the characters of people in the city were different in my place. Trust is the number one problem for me during that time, i should be very choosy in making friends and very careful in going out specially at night. I feel lonely and bored, but don't have choice. Instead of thinking the old days, i move on and try to cope up.
In your case, don't feel lonely just think that your current situation will be beneficial for you in the future. Try to make friends and have some time to have fun with them, go on outings, picnics or join in clubs for sport activities, those will help you to keep your mind busy and stay away from boredom and loneliness.

I think we can all relate to you on some level. It just means you are a loving, caring person. What would it say about you if you didn't miss them?
