women's magazines stink!

Why do most publishers seem to assume that the only things women are interested in are cooking, decorating, beauty tips, and the latest diet? The only women's magazine I've seen lately that has much substance is More. This is for older women, and used to be nothing but tips on how to avoid wrinkles, but its improved tremendously. If women would stop buying trash magazines, maybe publishers would be forced to come up with something better.

*giggles* Reading women's magazines is kind of a guilty pleasure for me, because they are so awful. I'm really not interested in most of the things they are about, but the image they present of women makes me giggle simply because it is so far off-base for me. So for me it's like reading comics or something. =p If anything, I'm more likely to read magazines on specific topics than ones "for women". Most of the things that interest me are things that would be of interest to either gender, or even things that are usually considered a "male hobby" (like video games).

I agree with you completly thats why i dont buy them any more. One minute they are saying oh how bad it is for women as they have the presure of been slim, and prety, and smart, and have 2.6 kids, and great career and earn good money and than you turn the page and there it is plastic surgery, loose 10 kg in 2 weeks, buy this bag or you wont be fashionable, cook this meal and everyone will love you and how to please your husband. Well I dont do any of that and I am fine thank you very much :). In the past 1 year I got only 2 magazines and thats only because there was something in it that I was interested in.

Yes, I agree with you. I don't like reading women magazines. All of them are talking about beauty tips, getting a partner, etc. I am so bored! I've never read those stuffs because it is repetitive and I may already know what it is. Why don't they talk about professional women or a place where women can enjoy their spare time or what women should do to solve the world problems, etc. It will be more interesting. It seems to me that the publishers would like to assume that all women should be a mother or a housewife. Thus, the publishers expect to have women at home and to do things at home. It is like living in the stone age :-)

There are probably some good magazines out there, they just don't make it to the grocery store racks. I'm not a bit magazine fan anymore, but they tend to grow into piles around my house and it takes me forever to let go of them. In one of my doctors' offices I came across one called Working Woman. I think that one looked like it had some substance to it. I receive Ladies Home Journal because I subscribed when a girl I knew was doing a school fundraiser. It does have a lot of beauty and cooking tips in there, so I know what you mean. But, it also has articles on health and relationships. I supposed if you wanted more articles related to world news or economics then you would have to just subscribe to magazines focused on those types of topics. If you still want a womans magazine that covers more, you would proably have to do some research. Good luck.

I hate that we don't have editing capablities on here. I'm horrible about proofreading... "I'm not a bit magazine fan anymore, but they tend to grow into piles around my house and it takes me forever to let go of them." That should have said "I'm not a big fan of magazines anymore BECAUSE they tend to grow into piles..."

Magazines are only harmful to the type of people reading them. If you are insecure to begin with, you will be even more insecure after you finish reading one. If you are comfortable with yourself enough, you'd enjoy the magazine and take some of the tips. As an avid magazine subscriber, I really don't feel any negative affects of reading magazines each month. I get some cool tips that I can leave or use. It's optional. A magazine can't make you do or feel anything.
