I posted this previously, but I think I coded it wrong because I haven't had any responses. I want to know whether people have benefitted from mediation, or whether they thinks its a waste of time. Is there a trick to getting atarted? I just seem to get bored and quit.

Meditation has done wonders for me. For calming me, soothing me and making me feel rejuvenated.
As a beginner to meditation there are a few things that will make it easier. One, get comfortable. You dont' have to suffer during meditation. If you have a sore back, try leaning against the wall. I have one friend who meditates laying down.
And two, start with short periods of time. I can only meditate for about 10 minutes at a time before I start to loose focus. So start out small. You can still get the same benefits.
And three, find a mantra. Something you can focus on. Repeat it to your self. And if you find yourself losing interest there, focus on your breath. Anything to take your mind off the daily issues of life.
Good luck. And I hope you can find peace in your meditation.

The Common phenomenon is that " ordinary person may consider meditation as a worship or prayer. But it is not so. Meditation means awareness. Whatever you do with awareness is meditation. "Watching your breath" is meditation; listening to the birds is meditation. As long as these activities are free from any other distraction to the mind, it is effective meditation.
Meditation is not a technique but a way of life. Meditation means 'to join together or to yoke' . It describes a state of consciousness, when the mind is free of scattered thoughts and various patterns . The observer (one who is doing meditation) realizes that all the activity of the mind is reduced to one.
These days it is commonly understood to mean some form of spiritual practice where one sits down with eyes closed and empties the mind to attain inner peace, relaxation or even an experience of God. Some people use the term as "my gardening is my meditation" or for jogging or art or music, hence creating confusion or misunderstanding.
In Short, one can say.. Whatever thing we do with full dedication and Concentration is Meditation..
And now Emilywickersham, has already started meditating.. and has not get bored .. as you have sincerely started to mylot.. and going by the above logic this is a form of meditation..

I like the idea of meditation, it seems so calm and peaceful, I have often wondered if it really is as good as they say, but I also think with my very active mind it would be very hard for me to do. I have tried in my younger days but it just didn't work, maybe someone here has some good ideas on it all...

I've been a huge fan of meditation for many yrs now and though I havent done any guided or lengthy meditations for a couple months I still meditate a few times a day...Believe it or not everyone does ;-) meditation is as simple as just daydreaming for a few minutes in the day :-D
Is there a trick to getting started with more involved meditations? No not really...its just a matter of not giving up when you dont get the hang of it the first few times thats all...Just like with trying anything new it takes time to get your groove goin ya know...
You said you get bored and quit but you dont say HOW or rather what type of meditation you are trying? Maybe trying a different method would benefit you more..
