I have used Gods name in vain before, and was very ashamed of myself for doing so, but how do you feel about it??
It really irritates me to here people say (GD) or oh my (G) most of the time I ask them are you praying..LOL but I just think when you use the name of God it should be held in the utmost respect!
My husband and I have even got rid of any movies in our home that is pg 13, and no rated r movies whatsoever..I just like to ask myself would I watch this if God came to my house for dinner??
Tell me what you think!

Hello TTucker3 :)
I also don't like to use God's name in vain. However, I often say "oh thank God", but i mean it when I say it everytime. Please tell me, am I using God's name in vain if I use such phrase?

I don't know that anyone has a right to judg, we have free will, and with freewill we are allowed to believe in God or not believe in God. There for to many people Saying things that are offensive to you in open forum.. they see nothing wrong with it, just as someone may find this topic offensive, but yet you see nothing wrong with it.
peoples beliefs are just that people beliefs, maybe people should keep more offensive phrases to themselves but again if they don't feel it is offensive then they know no better than to use it.
For the record, I don't believe in God. Hate me for it, call me names, try to soul-win to me, but remember we all have a right to our beliefs and as much as I respect yours, remember to respect mine. And PS if I say something to offend another, I actually appreciate them saying kindly, please don't say that in front of me, or I didn't like that please don't speak like that. And I do that myself. It isn't as smart allecky as say "are you praying" or " keep going God's listening" be polite to someone and you will feel better about the moment than being snotty about it. and often enough they will be polite back.

I don't think anyone here is judging anyone, I know I'm not. I am very sorry if anything that was said here has offended you in anyway, by no means is it meant to offend anyone!
And what you said about being smart allecky, I'm sorry but if you think I would say that to a total stranger your wrong, I would never do that.( but I know some people would) The only people I have ever said that too is the ones I know! people who in MY FAITH in THE CHURCH i belong to, the church that preaches what the ten cammandmenst are..thous shalt not use the lord thy God's name in vain have I ever asked if they are praying, NEVER HAVE I EVER SAID THAT TO A TOTAL STRANGER. I don't preach ot people, I just say what I believe.
As far as saying things in a forum, just like you said we all have free will right?

Doesn't bother me and never did. I don't believe in god, though so it means nothing to me. They are just words. I was bothered as a kid going to Catholic school to hear other kids who were supposedly good Catholic kids saying it. But then they just confessed on Wed and were good to go for the week. I know that isn't supposed to be how it works but that is what they thought. I thought they were hypocrites.
Funny, but I still say oh my god all the time even though I don't believe in god. I laugh at myself every time I catch myself doing it. It's just habit, though.

I don't like to hear God's name used in cursing. I do believe his name should be respected. However, I don't think that cursing is the only way or even the main way we abuse His name. I think anytime we ask Him for something that we really know is not sympathetic with His nature or will, we use His name in vain. I think when we bear His name, i.e., Christian, and we do things He can't condone we use His name in vain. I think when we do unloving things and claim we are doing His will we are using His name in vain.

Not all people are aware of the true meaning of "Do not use the name of your GOD in vain". Maybe because of our different religious orientation. But people like you who understand it better will surely feels guilty. But don't expect everyone to feel the same. BUt if you can explain ti to them without ending into an argumentation that it will be much beter. I feel guilty, too if I use the name of our God in vain.

YOu have a good point also an dby no means do I expect anything from anybody, this is my opinion, and how I was brought up and waht I believe!
I think that everyon ehas their own convictions in their walk with the Lord, and when you feel something tugging at your heart telling you not to do something, then by all means listen to it!
God is all mighty, and I know that there are others who don't feel the same. I am not saying that I have my doubts at times and my failures, man do I ever have them. LOL :)
but anyhow its great to know that someone has the same feelings and thoughts as I do.

Interesting topic here.
You're sort of like me with those movies, though I've never asked myself if I'd watch a certain movie if God came over for dinner. As far as I'm concerned, He's always over for dinner. I take a similar approach to the songs that I listen to, however, and I refuse to listen to certain radio stations because of topics that frequented by the songs they play. Any movie or tv show that doesn't know anything about God or Christianity, and still tries to make fun of it also kind of ticks me off, and I may end up not watching it anymore.
As far as taking God's name in vain goes, I think most of the time, people's exclamations of "Oh my god" would use god with a small "g", as in one of those pretend gods that you get in trouble for worshipping. Come to think of it, it's probably even worse to say that, because it means you actually have a "god", and you're headed for some serious trouble.
I guess what it all comes down to is people watching what they say and the meanings of their words. Many people use bad grammar and old phrases in the wrong way, and if they'd just think about it, they'd realize how stupid they sound.
And I never ever say "GD"! It's not my place to tell God whom to damn, after all :p

Very funny!! I lik eyour last comment! anad about the grammer, totally agree, don't you find it funny that they add new words to the dictionary all the time just because they are used frequently?
Many people think it's o.k. to use the B word, because of it's meaning in the dictionary, but it's all in how you use it!

I totally agree with you, Tucker! We use God's name in vain in so many ways. If you think about it, when we say, "Oh my God!"...really that is using His Name in vain. I have done that and I am trying, with God's help, to stop saying that. I try and say "Oh my gosh" instead.
We really need to think about Who God really is. When I pray at night, I get down on my knees because I am praying to this awesome, Almighty, Everlasting God and I need to humble myself before Him.
God bless you!

It doesn't offend me in the slightest, in fact i am propbably guilty of using it quite frequently. This may be due to the fact i have nlo absolute faith in god, not really sure if i believe at all and at the end of the day it is just words, if there is a god then i think your actions would speak louder i.e if you are a good person he ain gonna be bothered by a few words, there are so much worse things that happen to worry about it.
