NY Governor Authorizes Driver's Licenses for Illegal Immigrants

Gov Eliot Spitzer has reversed a policy set by his predecessor that required individuals to be US citizens OR legally in the US to receive a valid NY state driver's license.

Only eight states do not require people applying for a driver's license to show they are either citizens or here in the US legally. And, every one of those states is under pressure to add that requirement.
Because this is a "policy change"; neither the state legislature NOR NY state residents have any say about this change.
Mr Spitzer seems to think it will decrease accidents involving unlicensed illegal immigrants. Well, he is right and he is wrong. They will still have the accidents; but, they will now have driver's licenses. As a matter of fact, it may increase the number of accidents because the ones who were afraid to drive without a license will now have a license and be driving.
If an illegal immigrant is driving without a license and they are pulled over or have an accident; this was an additional charge which the police could use to apprehend these illegal immigrants and try to have them removed from our country. Now, they will have valid licenses and be safer from deportation.
Mr. Spitzer is showing his true colors to the people of New York. He is a friend to illegal immigration; even though, the illegal immigrants were not the ones who put him in office. If I were a NY resident and registered there as a voter; I would start looking at recalling this Governor.

They have to be crazy to be giving them Driver Licenses...It is like giving them the right to go out kill as there is so many accidents now they have caused..It is time they learn our language and show they really want to be here. I know like you said most of them, not all are just earning enough to retire back in Mexico as they can live real good on little US money there...Giving them a licenses would be like giving them a licenses to kill....
I don't understand what has happen to our country on give give until we are so broke... Now Calif is seeing what it is costing them..They are asking for Federal Funds to pay them back for all the support given in Medical, housing and all as they now are hurting as a state...

Illegal immigrants should not have any rights. We should do everything we can to keep them out of the USA. Yes, we need to help when we can, but the immigrants are coming over here, illegally, and taking the priviledges away from the citizens that should be getting them. I think they whould have to go to school to learn our language instead of us trying to learn theirs. If they don't like the way we do things, why are they here? They need to go back home and try to make their country better instead of coming over here and trying to change ours.

Persoanlly, I do not hink illegal immigrants should have to learn English; I think they should be kicked out of the country and hte bill for sending htem home sent to thier home country with them.
LEGAL immigrants, however, should be required to learn English, if they do not already speak English.
Not all; but, a large percentage of the illegal immigrants, have no interest in becoming Amercian citizens. They just want the benefits of living and working in our country AND they fully intend to return to their home country at some future date. Usually, when they have acquired enough money to set themselves up comfortably back in their homeland and/or retire becasue they are too old to work any more.

That is the kind of idiotic thinking that again panders to the illegals. Most of them are lousy drivers license or not plus it gives them a nice legal form of ID.

And that legal form of ID "fools" others into thinking they are here legally when they are not.
Some of the terrorists that pulled off the 9/11 attacks were also in the country illegally; but, they also had this type of "valid" ID, which allowed them to get on the planes.
