Our family is interested in getting a new pet. We have been offered a 18 month old Jack Russell for free and we have also been offered an American Eskimo dog from a rescue shelter. Another option is a 12week Border Collie. Our problem is choosing the right dog.
We know that we want a dog that does minimal shedding. A dog that can live in a small house and yard. Also, a dog that can be left alone for 6hrs per day. Preferebly, house trained
If you are familiar with dogs and can help us out, please write a.s.a.p.!

Well, for the living in a small home and yard it'd be best to get the Jack Russel. But i'm sorry to say all those dogs will shed. Even though the Jack Russel has short hair, my uncle has one and she sheds a lot. The best to be left alone that long would probably be the Amercian Eskimo dog. And I don't think a Border Collie would be too good for you, because that breed would really want a larger yard.
I say you get the Jack Russel and the American Eskimo dog! :) You're rescuing too puppies, and that way, when you're gone through out the day they won't be alone! :)
I hope I've helped!

Border Collies are like Austrailian Shepherds and I know they shed a lot. Plus they need a lot of exercise and have lots of energy. They're herding dogs and will try to herd anything, the kids, other animals and even cars! I'm not sure how they'd take being left alone for hours. They're very smart and get bored easily. If you do get it, I'd buy a crate to keep it in, otherwise it will chew things up and get into trouble. Mine did. She was pretty much paper trained when we got her at 8 weeks.
I don't know very much about the American Eskimo breed. So, can't help you there. I've heard that Jack Russel Terriers are very energetic. That's all I really know about that breed. I think they're really cute. They probably don't shed much because they're short haired dogs.
I would get on the internet and search each breed and find out more about their individual traits.

I would exactly say Jack Russel .For me they are the cutest dogs ever. And smartest as well they can get more orders than all other dogs. But they need lots of attention. You always have to take care of Jack Russel. Here is a video from Youtube and it is a Jack Russel you see how smart that dog is.

Your best bet would probably be a yorkshire terrier as they don't shed and if there are any allergies in the home then that type of dog would be good for you. They have the closest thing to human hair as my mom looked it up as she's allergic to animals and the only one that she could have was a yorkie. Teacup yorkies are just adorable too and they do just fine in a small home and yard and would be okay alone for the 6 hours that you are gone. Try to leave short periods first and then go out longer and longer each time so they (whichever dog you get) gets use to being alone. Are you looking at a certain sized dog or does it matter? Another one would be a shorthaired german shepherd. Very minimal shedding and they do just fine for hours as long as they have their toys, plenty of food and fresh water. I have a king longhaired german shepherd and she can be alone for 8hours sometimes 10hours at a time. I don't like to go too long but I have no choice when I'm working. She entertains herself and sleeps the rest of the time. She's also a very calm and smart dog. She's very independent that way. I make sure to reward her after a long day and get her out for a long walk and go in the yard and throw the ball. She loves to play ball. Well, that's all that I have for suggestions. Good luck and I'm sure that whatever you choose you'll be happy. Listen to your gutt, it's never wrong!
