sound absorbtion in a noisy school

I have got a job in a very noisy nursery school and I would appreciate advice on how to reduce the noise levels. The building is an open-plan barn like construction with a high ceiling lined with wood, there are few soft furnishings and it is very echoey. I would welcome any advice about how to reduce the noise on a tiny budget. I think that if we do some textile artwork and hang it from the ceiling it will help. Is this true? Would some types of fabric work beter than others? What do you sugest?
