Constipation Due To Hairballs

My older cat never had this problem until a few months ago. He never threw up hairballs or had constipation. Now, I have to feed him hairball remedy cat food, I give him grass to eat and even give him that hairball remedy laxative stuff every other week or so. Has anyone else had this problem, and is there any thing else you can suggest that I'm not doing that I should be? I hate giving him that malt hairball remedy because it contains petroleum. I comb him on a fairly regular basis, but he's a short-haired cat and I didn't expect to have this problem with him.

This does happen frequently to older cats, but the first thing I would do is either call/contact your veterinarian or set up an appointment. It will also make you feel better to know that this is the problem and not something else. Sometimes they will suggest an oil of some sorts, like Olive Oil but I don't want to tell you to do that. And sometimes a can of tuna with oil will help, but that's not the best for "all" cats either. Sometimes its from lack of water. You need to know for sure what the problem is, so you know how to deal with it. I would get an expert opinion first before doing anything further......take care and I hope it all works out for you and your precious cat.

Thanks so much for your advice. I think I will contact my vet about this. When I took him in for his annual check up in May, all his blood tests came back normal. He's developed this problem since then.

Maybe its just a stuck hairball and all will be well, but, like I said, it'll make YOU feel better too by getting an expert opinion. I know you can try this site....www.ask.com...and they have experts online to answer your questions, including animal experts. But, you have to pay. I think each one charges a price for their answer but maybe it'll be a little cheaper than the vet...I don't know.....Hope all is well and let us know!

go to http://www.21cats.org or http://www.vetinfo.com (when you get to this one, go to the cat section then the alphabetized bits) and you should find some good info about this problem there as well. and yeah, do talk to your vet. good luck with this!
