Yes, there are definitely a ton of dialects in China. Every province and sometimes cities and villages will speak Mandarin Chinese differently. My Chinese friends have difficulty understanding people from other parts of the country.
But there are also other languages... Cantonese is completely different from Mandarin. There's also Turkic (a language similar to Arabic) and Tibetan.

Yeap I am trying to learn Chinese and it is difficult if you don't practicfe. I known there are many ethnic groups and I know of some languages like hakka, fujien, cantonese and the main language Putonghua or Mandarin as it is the State language. I would love to be fluent at least in Mandarin..Do you want to see me singing in Cinese on Youtube?I can post a link lol..

welcome to China!
there are 56 nationalities in China, and 55 of them have their own language. there also are mony different dialects in different areas of China. so it's said the total number is more than 80.
But there is a common used language called putonghua or mandarine. most of Chinese can understand it, and a large part of pepole, especially pepole lived in large cities, can speak it. So if you learn it well, it will be no communication barrier for you.
At last, i want tell that Chinese is not so hard to learn. I have a friend came from American. He had been learning Chinese from he came to China, and he tried to speak with Chinese everyday, so he can understand daily Chinese and also speak some simple daily Chinese four month later. I think it's important to practise it erveryday .practise make perfect.
