Is animal cruelty on the rise in your area?

Someone in our area set a puppy on fire.
I was absolutely shocked out of my wits when I opened this morning's paper and read that some majorly disturbed person had burned a pup like that. The pup had to be euthanized, and police are not even sure where to begin, other than that they want to catch this person or persons because "they must be seriously disturbed."
Apparently it happened here in northern Indiana. The dog's owner had tied it out within her fenced backyard, then it was gone when she checked on it.
Is it me, or is animal cruelty on the rise everywhere? It seems like nearly every week, I read something about an awful event like this locally. What is getting into people??

Doesn't it make you wonder what kind of mind these people have?....From what I've read, these are the one's who will be killing people next because they start with animals first.
Animal rights have finally come to the forefront alot more than they ever have. You will read more about it in the papers now and they finally are doing something about it, slowly but surely.
I have a posting on Black Cats and Halloween if you'd like to read it. That's another terror to add to the cruelty of animals.
It's really scary that you can't even let your puppy outside for a short without wondering if it will be stolen or abused.
What a sad world we are living in.

It does seem to be but maybe because people are becoming more compassionate to the plight of animals people are being reported and the crimes against these beautiful creatures are being reported as important, it breaks my heart every time I see any of this going on, I think the punishments have to be made harsher.
