Are you a military spouse?

Japan

My family has recently relocated to Japan. There's not much to do in the local area around the base but there are plenty of trips around the country. I've applied for numerous jobs but am not being considered for them when I know I'm qualified. I would love to get out and enjoy what the country has to offer but find we can't afford most of the trips because they are expensive with only one income coming in. I was told by quite a few people that military spouses get priority when it comes to hiring but I must be at the bottom of the list. I'm thinking about a home business or something I can do at home with small children running around. There are so many scams out there I'm hesitate as to what is legitimate and what's not. Any suggestions?

I'm not a military wife, but my husband and I are going to Japan in sping of '09. He's in school to be a Japanese langauge teacher and going to Japan is an academic job/partnership. I can't wait to go.

Yeah, we both have been in love with and studying the Japanese culture, language and history for years so we're both very much looking forward to it.

It is not easy being a military spouse. I know, because I am one as well. When you are looking for jobs, spouses only get special preference when the jobs are offered through the government on post. I haven't been overseas as of yet, so I don't know how difficult it would be to find work there. I hope you do find something. Have you thought of taking children in during the day for a weekly fee? Babysitting will bring some money in and you will stay busy. I don't know how you feel about that, but it is an idea!

You know I thought about being a home childcare provider but I take classes on-line during the day since my classmates back in the states are logged on around that time. That's the best time for us to converse since it's evening time for them and day time for me. I'm still considering it though. If I went back to work I'd have to re-arrange my schedule anyway. In the meantime, I'll keep checking the job banks and the contracting squadron to see what they have to offer. The thing that concerns me the most is getting a low paying job and having to give an entire paycheck to the daycare.

I'm a vet and a spouse so I have an appreciation for the military. I am very proud of my husband for hanging in there. I'm thinking about doing a direct sales business. Like the pampered chefs, avon and things along that line. I found a website www.homejobsformom.com that has a list of direct sales companies to choose from.
