A thief in the house

cup of coffee - a cup of coffee

Ok...back by popular demand...the strange news!A man in San Antonio surprised a robber in his home. The thief had a knife and a gun. Instead of panicking, the homeowner invited him to breakfast. Over a cup of coffee, the would be theif told the man that he couldn't pay his bills and was upset. The man prayed with the robber, who then gave back everything he had taken. It wasn't until the man's wife came home and realized that part of her jewelry was gone, that they decided to call the police. I think the man is crazy...what about you?

He did the wrong thing. The thief was probably lying. would have had him mow the lawn, dig the garden, fix up the basement, put the insulation in, etc. Oh and the tree in our backyard needed pruning. That would put a little towards the stuff he stole and made him realize that it would be easier if he went down to the Unemployment Insurance or Manpower and got a job. Anything would have been easier than what we would have put him through.

The whole situation is crazy. The home owner did a great job of keeping his cool and inviting the robber to breakfast! But going along with it, shows that this robber may have some intelligence by accepting the breakfast, and giving back what they think was all of what he intended to take. By giving back part of it, he did get away with some loot. But now, the home owner can ID him for what was taken! Yikes! Maybe not so smart?

I'm thinking that the problems in his life may have overweighed his sanity just a bit. He certainly wasn't thinking very smartly. And had the wife not noticed the missing jewelry as soon as she did, he would probably have gotten away completely free.

Yeah I think so too. I mean inviting him to breakfast and for a cup of coffee.it's good that he prayed with the robber but still I would of gotten away or got to a phone to call 911 and let the police handle everything.

I thought that at first. but the more I think about it, I wonder what would have happened had he turned around to run. Would the robber have panicked and shot him in the back. Or taken him hostage, which would have been bad because then the wife would have come home and walked right into it.

Uh, that is a bit weird. Okay he tried to reason with the guy. Im sure the home owner was scared so he tried to do everything he could so the guy wouldn't shoot him maybe. BUT the fact that the guy claims to have givene everything back and then they decided to call the police. HUH? I woul dhave called the police as soon as he left. Or maybe I woul dhave tried to go to the bathroom while he was still in my house eating breakfast and then go to the phone an dcall th epolice. This is a crazy story. I doubt this is TRUE.

I don't think anyone's crazy. What I do think though is that the man who invited the thief to coffee is a very compassionate and rational person. I applaud his effort to comfort the thief because not all thieves steal without reason. It sucks that the wife ended up calling the cops but honestly, how many people would care enough to offer comforting to a person who's willing to go so far to invade a person's privacy and home especially when they could potentially be killed. The man of that house is truly an amazing person.

This is pretty amusing. Whether it is true or not, we may never know. However, I think the man was brave to do what he did considering the results could have gone in the other direction. Anyways, this is something else and if he was able to help someone change for the better, more power to him.

I hope that it wasn't all for nothing. I mean, since he took the jewelry anyway. Maybe if they caught him the prosecutor will be easy on him since he gave back most of what he took in the first place. I don't understand his need to steal, no matter how bad things had gotten at home.

oh that was kindly of the man. i also read sometime ago, about a man who led a robber to Christ by praying with him and listening to the man's hurts. i think it is noble for him to do so.

To finish my sentence from above, since this got posted twice :) Last week, someone was in our house while we were all at work. They had picked the lock on the front door. Mike looked around the kitchen and into the storage room, the kids room and said "Doesn't look like there is anything missing." I walked into my bathroom and looked on the counter where my jewelry tray is. I said "Well, except for my sapphire necklace and earrings, my emerald bracelet and my topaz earrings.

I wouldn't say that this man is crazy but I would suggest that people not try this if they find a burglar in their home. I am surprised that the guy didn't get hurt and what would you talk about to someone that had just came into your home and stole your stuff? I don't think I could do such a thing!!

i think the man sympathised with the thief and the thief maybe that was his first time of trying such a thing if not, doesn't he know that what he has taken, if not found they'll be able to locate him for the house owner would have acquitance with him due to the interaction. the man knows what he has done, he couldn't take away the things due to the armunitions and probably couldn't fight him maybe because he is too strong for him and the best thing is to get use to him and know him a little and it'd be easy to locate him with the police.

That was the impression that I got from reading the article. That the theif was just a regular man down the street that had fallen on hard times and had given into temptation because he was frustrated with the situation he was in. Too bad he didn't turn to someone for help rather than breaking in. now he'll have a criminal record on top of everything.

I think scared is probably more like it. His thoughts had to be...keep this guy calm so that he doesn't shoot me. I know my first thought would be protect myself, and get him out of here while he's still calm. Then we worry about calling the police.

Perfect........his nature sounds so much like mine....the most important thing that he got out of inviting the thief is his 'Life' more than anything else.. Afterall a thief is a thief he had come to rob.. And the man couldn't have helped him in any other way.. What's funny is the thief decided only to take the wife's jewels..how sad... No wonder the wife won't co operate..

it's amazing that we're not hearing about a double homicide with a robbery gone bad. The quick thinking of this homeowner just might have saved not only his life but the one of his wife as well. He had two weapons...but I wonder if he would have used either of them if he felt threatened?

This is true. It could have gone either way, whether he cooperated or not. I know they told us in a teacher's training several years ago that if we had a hostage situation at school that we try to cooperate with the gunman, because it sometimes kept them calmer.

The homeowner must have nerves of steel. I'd freak out if I ran into a burgler in my home with or without weapons. To sit down and have breakfast with him...Wow. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Either that or he was running on pure adreneline. You know kind of like that super human strength that Mom's get when there is a crisis with one of her kids and then when it's all over she collapses in a crumpled heap? Oh wait...that's me!

I would absolutely love to see the expression on the police officers face when he took this man's statement. Wow...I believe in the power of prayer, but sometimes the Lord gives you other options lol.

We've been through a robbery, but never while we were at home. It is such an awful feeling to know that someone has been in your home, and going through your personal things. I think there were probably some angels in the house with this man.

Wow that's an inspired thing he did. Very brave to say the least. I probably would've freaked out and just started yelling! I hope the robber feels bad for stealing from such a nice guy....... The skeptic in me thinks maybe he pawned the jewelery and didn't want his wife to be mad so he created an elaborate cover up.

that's funny, and a scenerio that I wouldn't have thought of. If that is what happened...he'll get caught eventually, because I think pawn shops have cameras. and you have to show id when you pawn or sell something there. We sold a couple of big pieces of my aunt and uncles when they moved to a retirement center. My uncle had to show his driver's license.

This sounds quasi incredible, but if it really happend - BRAVO to this guy. On the other hand if the thief was armed - it was a smart move of this guy to keep him calm and not violent. i did not understand if thethief gave everything back except the jewelry of the wife, or did he gave all he stole before he was invited for the breakfast? no...if I read the story right...he gave it all back after the guy fed him, prayed with him and basically made him feel like a human being again. All except the jewelry, which most men (sorry) probably wouldn't have thought to check for. At least mine didn't.
