no mystery really - Lucy was origanaly a real person - a little girl that Julian Lennon went to school or nursery with - he drew a picture of her, took it home and said it was of Lucy in the sky with diamonds. The imagery may have been inspired by LSD - the band were using it by that time (John definitly) - but the Beatles never publically said that and always denined that the title was deliberete.
Lennon at one point (much later after the band had split up) did say that it was partly about wanting to meet some one - his dream woman "the girl with kalidascope eyes" who ended up being fulfilled by Yoko.

I was told it was a drawing by Julian Lennon about his friend named Lucy (as mentioned earlier). Some of the lyrics came from John's memory of the "Alice in Wonderland" series
