i have two puppies (twelves weeks old). One is especially in the habit of narming the other. it runs after it and hold it by the neck in a death grip. I've since separated them. what caused this? the mother doesn't even seem to be bothered about them except to whine at them occasionally. I'm bothered.

Ha ha.. I seemed to have a similar kind of problem when I brought in two puppies, they also fought a lot in their early days.. I just decided to return one, and just keep one.. But in ur case, u hav to do smthing else.. Try putting one inside ur house for sm days, and the other one outside, outside here means in the lawn and balcony if u have them.. That wud make them realize of how close tehy are to each other, and maybe they will never fight again.. Don't worry abt the mother, they always love to see their puppies running and fighting with each other.. Its u who has to do smthing..

Pups usually like to play around... are your pups american stafordshire terriers? Its usually in their nature to bite the neck... its instinct to them to go for the neck. Anyway, it also make sense if both pups are male since dogs are said to be territorial. If the pups are trained and socialized, they tend to act "normal" or friendly around other dogs, may it be with male or female dogs. Temperament of the dogs is also important especially for heavy boned breeds like AST and rottweiler.

Take the dogs in for a vet consultation. It's likely that they're just playing and rough-housing. Play aggression isn't unusual in animals, particularly when they're young. It could be that one is trying to establish dominance over the other. However if the other dog is actually drawing blood or physically injuring the other, then you may have to consider keeping them apart. Either way, few of us here are actually qualified to tell you what's going on, so a trip to the vet or a call to your local humane society to ask questions might be in order. Good luck!

i think i will do what you said as the other puppy is physically harming the other. it's quite serious.

then seeing the vet is the most appropriate course of action. I wish you well. :)

I have a new puppy and she does that with other animals too. It's the way they play. The other puppy would be screaming if it was hurting it. Sometimes when puppies play it looks like they're hurting each other but if you actually feel the strenth of the bite with your hand, it isn't very hard at all. My puppy was playing with a very tiny kitten and it looked like she was going to kill her, but the kitten kept coming back for me and got in some good hits too. That's just how they play. Unless the other dog is actually getting hurt then I wouldn't worry about it.
