Cable...Waste or Not?

Do you refuse to have certain things b/c you think of them as a waste of money?
In the town we live in, you either have to have Cable tv or Satelite. You don't get any channels just by plugging in your tv. However, Cable runs about $50.00 a month and Satelite is more. I think it's a waste of money to have Cable...I'd rather buy the DVD's I want and just watch those. My Mom has Dish Network and they have trouble with it all the time and she pays over $100. a month for it. I just can't see paying for Cable and having nothing to show for it when I can spend half of that and have DVD's that I own.
What about you? Would you rather own it outright or do you like having Cable/Satelite?

WOW! $50.00 a month is cheap for cable ours is like over a hundred and still increases every 6-12 months, Ithink the service is largly being extorted and in places were the cable and dish network have no competition they seem to be able to charge what ever they want and then try to throw a double charged bill in there once in a while.
Me my self I only need the internet service but I have kids and a wife that like tv as far as most phone services cable companies offer now as long as I have broadband internet I can get a skype in phone number for about $35.00 a year for unlimited calling to anywhere, and get skype out for about another $35.00 a year so for $70.00 a year I have my phone and if I really wanted to cheap it out I could also get my self a set top mediaplayer and drop cable altogether except for the broadband intern service.

I have a twelve dollar basic cable package. If it ever goes away, I will not go for the big package. I get it for the weather channel basically. I would still be able to get two or three local channels on my television without it. There are some things I really enjoy on cable, but I will not pay the $50.00 a month it costs. I do not watch TV enough to justify that expense.

I am a tv addict, and will gladly admit it. Life without cable would make me sad haha. We can get a couple of channels just by plugging in the tv, but we live in the middle of the city, so that is probably why.
We use Comcast, and you can get the basic cable for $8/month, but it's only like 15 channels and most of them aren't the good ones. It's PBS, HSN, and local access channels mostly...besides your regular network stations like ABC/NBC, etc.
However, I like CW and MTV....i only watch MTV to watch The Hills and Pageant Place, and I only watch CW for One Tree Hill, but not having those channels would make me a little sad :( We also love Family Guy and Comedy Central. I wish they would create a "pick a channel" package so I could have network stations, cw, mtv, espn, espn2, cstv, and css...for all my college football. But, of course, that would be entirely too easy and convenient!

I have gone long periods with no cable or satelite. I have a large movie collection that I prefer to watch anyway. I can't find enough good shows on TV to make it worth the cost. I need time anyway for other interests. I have had times when I flipped through all the channels and could not find anything to watch. In that case, the Weather Channel does fine...lol

I need cable service for my VOIP telephone and my broadband computer connection. Hubby watches the TV. We do not pay quite as much as you for this service, but I would pay whatever I had to as this service saves us quite a bit of money on telephone calls and I easily earn enough from online activities and saving on things I buy online to more than pay for the cost of the cable.
I don't understand owning DVDs because I don't watch very many things more than once. Actually, I don't watch very much TV at all, even when it is playing in the same room with my computer, but hubby likes it. He did say something about it being overpriced, but I said POOH, you don't spend enough on yourself, and ordered if for him anyway.

Where I live, in Hawaii, you either have cable or Satellite dish, I would like to switch to Satellite, the cable bill is going up again, about 45.00, I have my internet with the cable company. If you like DVD's Net Flix might be the way to go, starts from $4.99 a month, and they mail it to your home. I don't watch many movies, just the basic cable channels, but the Satellite has more channels, I plan to subscribe to Satellite, the cable company has a monopoly here in Hawaii, same with Phone, Electricity, Water, only one company, no choice, and they raise their rates and you just pay, no arguement.

I think you're very sensible and if you enjoy the DVDs and you are saving money that is great. I don't see the point in paying extra for services which are not working. We only have cable because our government have decided we soon won't be allowed to use analogue tv anymore but the way the programmes are going I may stop watching tv and cancel.

Two things I cannot do with our...cable and internet. I get them both from the same company and they are not cheap but as that bill is about the only non essential thing I treat myself to I justify that way.

I have satellite, and to tell you the truth we are a big TV family, so we could not live with out it. I would rather do with out a phone if there was a choice to be made. I pay about 60.00 a month, I do not however subscribe to the movie networks. If there is a movie I want to see I either rent it or as you say buy the DVD's that I know I will watch again.

In my area you have the choice of over the air, you can just plug in the t.v., cable and satellite. With over the air, you can get the 5 local t.v. channels and a few out of town ones. But they are just network.I never had satellite so I don't know for sure what they offer, but I have had cable since 1981.We started with basic cable. Basic cable had all our local channels and a few cable channels. Then we added HBO and Showtime. Then we added Cinemax.About ten years ago, we were offered digital cable. With digital not only do I get my local channels and all the basic channels, we get several movie channels. And there is music choice. Music choice is like satellite radio that you listen to on your t.v.I like cable because not only do I have enough movie channels that I have my choice of movies, there are great t.v. channels that I can see. I have two favorites, Logo and TLC. These are not offered over the air. And now they are saying that in February all t.v.s will be digital. So here in the States there won't be any over the air t.v.

Our kids have had DishNetwork, and the screen was blank more often than not. We chose to have the combo from our cable company... up where we are, we don't even have cell phone coverage, so when cable was offered, we took it. We have flat-rate telephone, including all the long distance calling we want, we have good clear reception of the TV, and we can both be online at the same time. When we were both wrestling for computer time on dial-up, it sometimes got ugly around here! And with the package deal, we are paying less than we used to pay for the telephone alone!

I currently have a 70-something-channel basic package (no premiums like HBO or Showtime.) There were a few channels I loved to watch like MTV2 and the Game Show Network, but the cable company moved those to its more-expensive digital cable package. I hope I'll be able to upgrade to the digital service within a year or two. I considered satellite service, but I could get pretty much the same channels on digital cable.

I think cable TV is a waste of money as I hardly watch TV anyway. I just don't have the time to sit in front of a box or the attention span! Besides, all it is a bunch of channels with nothing good on and satellite TV is just more channels with nothing on!

I like my cable it also has my internet and phone on it some times Ithink it cost to much but I dont want to miss being in here or see the new shows when they come on And love to watch the old movies on TMC and AMC .
Even if ya have a ton of DVDs you still might not watch them but one time then your stuck with them. And with a VCR ya can tape shows and still have them with no more cost than what the tape cost.

We had cable for years and we were paying 56.00 a month and there was never anything worth watching and not all that many channels. We went to satelite and we have a ton of channels and we pay 59.82 for the package we have. We will never go back to cable for sure not.
