Talking in CAPS...

Do you ever see ppl online (on and off MyLot) typing in ALL CAPS? Have you ever been told that it is like yelling?
I did that when I first got online until a friend told me that it is considered yelling and I shouldn't do it unless I was angry or trying to make a point. Now I rarely do it...but I do see others doing it.
Do you think it's rude to point it out? Do you correct ppl when you see them doing it? What other internet rules have you heard while online?

All my friends only used caps when they are making a point. I love it . That way I really know what they mean. But if there were a friend using caps, I would tell them that using caps means you are yelling. My nephew is the opposite, he only uses small cased letters for every thing, even names.

I just read a response from someone in all caps the other day. I didn't say anything, I just assumed they were too lazy to do it right. Or, maybe they were yelling at me. I try not to pay these kinds of things too much attention.

It doesn't bother me, but I do know that it bothers some. When I first got online, I would make the letters bigger because I felt that the size was not big enough. Then this friend asked why I was yelling and got all freaked out on me. So I try to leave the default size unless I am blogging or something..

Yes, I'm aware of the rule, and since, I'm never fond of typing in all caps I have no problem with it. I'm just finicky about capitalizing only letters that need to be capitalized in a sentence, so typing in all caps is a big no no for me.
However, I do not take it upon myself to correct others if they do decide to type in all caps, unless i'm in a chat room and is conducting a conversation with them. And even then, I may not correct them, unless i'm quite sure that they are trying to be rude to me.

Personally, if I meet the person who invented that IDIOTIC (making point) rule, they will find out what real yelling is like. WTF are they to tell someone else how to type?
Gimme a BREAK!! (again, making point).
I do most of my yelling with my word choices, caps are not necessary, but I do have a partner who is very nearsighted and when we communicate via IM, we type in caps because it's easier to READ...ah, imagine that!
Very good topic of discussion.

I heard of that rule, and that is the only internet typing rule I heard of, I also heard about do not offend anyone, translated into agree with them, even though their beliefs are wrong. I do not mind capitals to emphasize a point or quoting someone shouting, but if you do not point out those who do not say, "sorry, but I wanted to type normally, but my capital lock does not work," they will keep doing it.
We must not be afraid of letting people know the correct internet typing rules.

I have heard that before, and I understand why some open forums impose such a rule. I personally don't consider it like yelling unless the person doing it appears to be in the midst of an argument. Sometimes I type a word or sentence in all caps if I want to emphasize it, but that doesn't mean I'm yelling.

I do see it on occasion but just figure the writer is perhaps not very good at typing. Personally, I find it very difficult to read works that are written in all capital letters, I would much rather read everything in lower case if one was to not use the shift button at all. I have heard that it is the means of shouting in type, and we do use caps when we wish to emphasize a word, so that makes sense to me.

I use to do it all the time until someone asked me why I was yelling. I had no clue what they were talking about until it was explained. The MyLot guidelines state not to do it on the site. I've only seen a couple of discussions in all caps.
My husband emails me all the time in all caps. I answer in the same manner. We can both see ok so have no idea why he does this but it does catch my attention.

I heard about that rule as well. And I don't use all caps as a rule.
However there is also another side of writing all in caps that people should consider before going all out against a person using it : some people can't see very well and for some of them caps are easier to read.
I prefer to get my impressions from what people are writing than from how they are writing it. A person can be writing with no caps and still be "yelling " at me and another can be writing and caps and being respectful and thoughtful, so I don't pay much attention to it. If it bothers me for some reason I will tell the person and then read the answer. There might be a good reason for the person to write all in caps.

I never understood why newcomers to the internet type in caps. I think it's just simply obnoxious and makes everything ridiculously hard to read. Typing in caps is a "Don't" on the mylot guidelines. and I don't normally talk to anyone who types in caps and I don't read things when they are in caps.

I don't care if a person types in all caps or not. I don't see it as yelling but maybe merely stating a fact or wanting to point something out however in all caps, I say to each his own. What difference does it make anyway? But that's me and my opinion and no I wouldn't call someone on that.
