To rent s car..or to not rent a car..

We are planning a trip for the first week of January 2008. We are unsure if we should get a rental car or not. We are staying at the All Star resorts..which on a map looks kinda far away but at the same time there is transportation all over the place. Can someone who has been there give me their opinion please..
