Which is the official date/month for thanks giving?

Yesterday we were in church for a thanksgiving ceremony. I was asking myself loudly..........which is the official date for thanksgiving? I thought it was a bit foolish for me to ask our pastor. Anyone with the right answer? what is the origin of this day?

I think it is September 30th of every month but am not sure. even its origin i dont know.
