Should I consider another dog?

October 2, 2007 5:09am CST
I have been a dog owner for over 25 years. During this time we have never been without a dog. My dog is 13 this year and diabetic. She is diabetic and I know her time will come in the next couple of years, three at the most. I am torn between the affection and company that a dog gives you and the freedom that you have when you do not have a pet. Should I get another dog or live without? What would you do?

Try going without a dog for 2 months. Allowing yourself time to grieve. And then adopt a dog from the shelter. Right now don't focus on what will happen 3 years from now.Your dog might surprise you.

I always have mongrel dogs, I prefer to rear from being a puppy. They are less trouble, less expensive, less likely to be stolen and dont get as ill - and they live longer. The only exception id that maybe I would like a Ckhocolate labrador

That truly is up to you. You have to make the decision for yourself. You know what time and effort it takes to take care of your current pet. YOu know what you want to do when that pet is gone. Good luck with your decision.

I can completely identify with your feelings. My dog Miko had diabetes and was in kidney failure when we found out. We were able to pull him out of it and he had to have two shots of insulin a day, a prescription dog food and frequent vet visits. We had to put him down Friday and it tore me apart. We discovered he had the diabetes in March, by August he was completely blind from his cataracts and his left leg became lame from arthritis. So, we felt it was time. You will be surprised at the resilience of dogs though. Miko did his best to continue living his life and adapting, but it got to be too much for him. I am struggling with the decision to get another pet or be able to have the freedom to do things that I would not normally do with a pet. I think for now, we are going to forgo having a pet in the house. If we do decide, we will just wait until my husband comes home from deployment then make a decision as a family. For now, I am grieving for my little buddy. I miss him so.

I know how you feel, I had a dog that have illness and its make me sad to think that one day I will lose him. For a dog lover its hard to live without a dog, why not give your self time atleast a month to see if you can make it without a dog. I'm curious to know how you know that your dog have a diabetic, can you pls tell me what are the signs of it. Thanks in advance.
