Are Canadian disparaging remarks about the States due to jealousy

I am a Canadian, well I do not feel like one because I do not like snow, cold, curling, or hockey. We went on a trip and came back through the States, that is the Northern states and we were treated quite well when we were there. The weather was lovely, and they had these rolling hills covered with trees, lots of cows, horses, sheep, etc. and it was much warmer than back in Manitoba.
Now my husband would not take any photos because he was traveling on the interstate and complained about the concrete jungles and that. And when we used to get the paper, there was also this letter to the editor on how terrible, selfish, warmongering, better than thou, the Americans were.
What I am wondering is this attitude due to jealousy rather than actual fact?

I am American and have traveled to Vancouver. We loved it there! The people we met were friendly. Even the beggars were nice and polite! I was amazed because I thought that Canadians didn't like Americans and they didn't seem to care one bit. Also, while we were traveling in Mexico, we met an English man. I also had thought they hated Americans. He said they hated most people but he himself has gotten to know many people from other parts of the world and has found that the stereotypes he's heard most of his life are incorrect. I think we put too much stock in stereotypes without trying to find out the truth. The truth makes it too hard to dislike someone because of where they're from or skin color or whatever because you have gotten to know them as a person.

You have to talk to a person. Mind you, I get along with everybody. Why I probably could talk to an axe murderer without flinching. :) And I hate stereotypes. Look I am Canadian, but I hate hockey, curling, do not like snow, and certainly do not like mild food with lots of carrots in them. So much for stereotypes.

Americans talk bad about Canadians just as much as Canadians talk about Americans. We're sort of like high school Rivals. We're on the same continent, yet we're not the same country. We each have a lot to be proud of. We each have things to be ashamed of. We really do like each other... but we have to be tough and proud of our country. So we bad mouth the other one.
Hey Canadians have some really funny comedians.
I don't hate Canada, but I'm glad I'm American and not Canadian. I went to Australia once to visit and someone asked if I was Canadian and I was like "WHAT? NO I'M an American!!!!" like it was some big insult. It wasn't... it's just what we do.
America and Canada, High School Rivals.

I wish I was American. I do not feel Canadian, I am not that fond of hockey, curling, the food here is too mild, and the climate, well not as warm. I do not like to talk bad about another country, unless it was a Communist country or one ruled by an evil dictator, but I think it is jealousy especially when things are cheaper down there, etc.

This was one man's opinion about Americans. I am a Canadian as well and visit in the USA at least once a year or more often. I do see a lot of cultural differences, in particular in the bible belt. Also some of the opinions some Americans express frighten me. However, I don't hear a lot of disparaging remarks from my Canadian friends about Americans. I don't think Canadians are jealous of America, in particular right now where so many beautiful young men and women die for a war that was not necessary. In general I thinks Americans are like everyone else. there are awfuly nice people and others that are not so nice, same as here in Canada.

We read about how terrible Americans are via the letters to our editor in our newspaper, and it is not just one man. I think the editor chooses them directly and this was before the Iraqi war. He or she just wanted these letters to convince us to be more patriotic by hating Americans. It is the same thing as to make yourself better, you must insult everyone else. Being a Christian and pro-life and anti abortion, and anti homosexual marriage, I am rather upset at the way our country is going, and am more inclined to agree with the American view. I do find the Americans rather nice people and not as portrayed.

Hi suspenseful,
As a fellow Canadian I am unsure if it is jealousy or that the editor just happened to run into a person who was having a bad day. Saying that all Americans are terrible, selfish, etc is like saying all Canadians are that way as well. People can have a bad day no matter where they live. Also with the USA being right under us you would think that we would have a better relationship with them. For years it has seemed like the Canadians and Americans just can't get along. One thing that makes me laugh though is that some other countries really think that all Canadians live in igloos. I guess we miss the summer season lol.

I suspect the editor of our paper has an anti American bias so he or she choses at least one anti-American letter to the editor a day. It could also be, a sneaky method to keep us Canadians to go to America to get all those oodles of bargains. Just say what is wrong with America and keep quiet on the good things. Trouble is, we have our TV set and we can see for ourselves that America is not that bad a place, and when you go down there on a trip, the Americans are nice people as well.

I agree with you 100%. My mom & dad live in Arizona, and I have gone down there a few times to visit. I didn't have any problems with the people there, in fact I thought they were very nice. Maybe they were trying to discourage you to go to the States to take advantage of the bargains like you said, seeing as our dollar is going up! I guess one will never know!

I am not sure about that but maybe it's each persons perspective. I traveled through Europe and found everyone pleasant and friendly. My brother and his wife.....tell of other experiences. When I traveled I would ask people if I could take their pictures etc. I visited with anyone who would talk because I love finding out details about where I travel. My brother said he found most Europeans distant and cool. Maybe it's how you treat people and how they return the treatment.

When we were on the cruise, we met with some people who told that they had been to Italy, and being Canadians got polite treatment, while the Americans got the rude treatment because of the damage their weapons had done during the war. I wish I had been there to tell those Italians a thing or two, because one cannot help what his grandparents had done or supposed to have been suspected of doing. But my Italian is not that good, yet.

I'm a Canadian WinterTexan. I live on a Farm in Ontario in the summer and in a Seniors Park in Alamo Tx. in the winter. There are about 1000 residents in the park during the winter and about 160 are Canadian. Everyone gets along famously. WE love our American friends. There are no better people on earth! I'm sure the Americans are not jealous of anybody anywhere. Why should they be? I'm very happy to be Canadian and I'm proud of our Canadian way. But I never let that detract from my Texas experience!

We never had any bad experiences with Americans, but my husband was rather reluctant to talk to them and they had to draw him out. All he heard most of his life was how bad Americans were and he did have a bad experience with his boss and some American workers at his job, but his boss was a jerk anyway, and even the Americans who worked at the company hated him.

As of late, I have encountered a strong bias against USA from pretty much all over.
Not just from middleeastern countries or teorrists, but ppl like me and everyone else here.
On many political choices I am one of those that feel USA is doing things wrong, and I dont like the americanisation of fast food all over here in my country. But honestly... any american is a possible friend so its not the americans I dont like, its the outward policies I dont like. Some of their culture.. but hey theres a LOT of cultures I dont like, even some of our own habits I dont like.
But no, I very much doubt its jealousy that makes ppl not like USA atm. But rather an annoyance at the behavior as a country. How it manifests with the individual is often very different, but when asking into it, it nearly always comes down to the politics.

Well I hate all those McDonalds all over the place, and the countries should have their own Fastfoods. In Canada, we have Tim Hortons. I still think it is jealousy, since it has always been in place and increased with our Liberal government before Bush came to power and Clinton was the president whose ideals were like those of our former Liberal government.

America and Americans have a bad reputation around the world. I wish everyone could see how beautiful the US is and how nice most of the people are. We are not as it is said a money, war wanting country. We all work and have families just like the rest of the world. Sure there are some evil people in America but where in the world are there none! I know it is not a fact! We are actually a warm loving people that extend welcomes to many different races and backgrounds.

When we were at the motels and when we went to the restaurants, the waitresses were the nicest and politest people we had ever met. Even when they were obviously busy, they took the time out to be courteous. They would put many of the service people up here in Canada to shame.

This attitude is the same attitude that we Americans are also guilty of which is to paint another country or culture with a broad brush as if every person in a particular country or culture is exactly the same and have the same thoughts and ideas. Although I do believe that some Americans are selfish and warmongerers and are of the opinion that they live in the best country ever and anyone who doesn't agree with them is a d*mn commie(quite a bad thing in this country), I don't believe it's fact or jealousy that some people attribute this to all Americans.

I find that when I listen to some Canadian networks, the CBC in particular, they have to put the word Canadian on everything as if it is something to be proud of. Mind you, I do see American Flags, and in our country, Canadian flags, but that does not bother me, but surely we are not so ignorant that we do not know whether something is American or Canadian unless someone shouts it about fifty or more times?
