Taking some time away from the PC last couple of days, I took the time to read "Running with Scissors" a memoir by Augusten Burroughs.
The first few chapters left me with a dropped jaw and speechless, and I thought nothing could shock me!
Then as I read more and more pages, my reactions turned to "WOW", "Oh my God" and finally to "Baby, this has to be true, you cant make this stuff up".
Its like a Jerry Springer and Montell Williams martini!
I read the 304 page book in 2 days, less than that really I went to the library and checked the book out yesterday oh about 1:30 pm and finished the book just now, the next day by 3:00 pm.
Strangly and sickly entertaining I somewhat felt joy! Terribly at the expense of someone elses life, but none the less joy. I was trying to escape my so called boring pititful life and walked right into a life that couldnt get any worse that it already was. I felt a sense of hope about mine.
I laughed, I felt sorrow and pain, I felt disgusted, I felt embarassed for even reading it at times, but I was mostly intrigued and consumed with Augusten and his life. Like he was a freak show act at a traveling circus I couldnt take my eyes off of, I couldnt stop reading it. It just left me wanting more of him. Its freaking me out! lol
I read many comments from people who had read the book, and nothing that they said prepared me for what I read. I now understand the controversary about making this book into a film. I dont think its possible with just an R rating.
Has anyone else read this book? What are your thoughts on it?

I watched this movie a while back. The movie was kinda boring and not that good. But i still went out and bought the book. I still havent had a chance to read it yet, but my mom said it was pretty good.

Hi Chris,
See I dont think that where I live will get the film, it was supposed to come out a little over a year ago I think, and it never did. They said it was too controversial and all this other crap. lol
Did Meryl Streep play the mother? I had read that she was supposed too and now that I have read the book, I think she could have pulled that off rather well. lol
Im sure the book is nothing like the film, they usually are better than the film, so I hope you get a chance to read it soon!

The mother was played by Annette Bening, and i think she did a good job at it. I hope to start reading the book soon.

Im going to have to hunt this down on DVD! lol
I really would like to see it in film version. I can see Anette Benning in the role of the mother, but I think Meryl Streep would have done well too.
Thanks!

I have been dying to read this book due to the controversy! I am awaiting the break between fall and spring semesters (I teach college nursing) to have time to pleasure read. It seems that the book is an easy read and very intriguing. I can't wait! The movie has never come to my small town, but I will likely rent it at the video store after reading the book of course!

Hey Crazy,
I cant find it at any video store, so good luck! I live in a small town too. This might be one I would have to by online or something.
I read it rather quickly, I couldnt put it down at all! So you might just be able to finish it in a night! Its only 300 pages you could do it. Had I gotten it that morning instead of that afternoon, I would have had it read by the time I go to bed.

I haven't read it, but now you have me intrigued, that I might have to run down to the libary and pick it up. Hmm..what would they think when the pastor's wife checked this book out? Would it raise a few eyebrows?

Hi Carpenter,
LMBO, Erm no I dont think the Pastors wife would approve of this.....it would raise more than just a few eyebrows, it would probably cause some fainting!
If you have an open mind and dont get shocked too easily, I think you will find it intersting. It does make you think about some things, and it makes you feel thankful that you were born into people with sanity. Well it did me anyway...lol
Hope you enjoy it if you read it!
Thanks for the friend add too!

I also found this book disturbingly delightful. It makes you laugh at things you probably shouldn't be laughing at, but its just so funny. It is one of my favorite books. He's written a few others. I highly reccomnend Magical Thinking. It's a collection of short stories from his life and some of them are absolutely hilarious. You get the same shameful joy feelin as you do with Running with Scissors.

LOL We are sick arent we?!?!? LOL
I was going on to "Dry" next. Since its the sequel and all. haha I did plan on reading "Magical Thinking" I have seen that title as well.
I think I laughed more from shock than anything. He sure painted a vivid picture of this house he was staying in with Dr F. OML!!! I think what scared me most is, I have seen a few families in my time like this, both sides. Maybe not to this extent, but damn sure close! lol
Thanks for the suggestion Maybebaby!
