Sims 2 character creation question

I just bought the Sims 2 (Sims 2 & Nightlife ex pack) and was wondering if anyone knew about the "custom" hair options. It wouldn't let me select this when creating my first character...I had hoped to do some funky streaks, etc...thinking since you can fully customize everything else, this would be an option as well. I cannot seem to click on the icon for it, and it is greyed out. Does anyone know anything about this? Is it something that needs other expansions, or for something to be done throguh the game for it to be selectible?
