Do you find social bookmarking really helps your earnings?

Over the last few months I've made several essays into self-promotion, including signing up for the following:
1. Facebook
2. Thisisbyus.com
3. Stumbleupon
4. myLot
5. HubPages
I also started a blog about getting published as a writer(http://getthatnovelpublished.blogspot.com/).
To be perfectly honest, I think it's all been a total waste of time. At the moment, it looks like I'm on track to make about $10 a month from 100+ articles, which seems to be about average for most people once they're established on Helium, without doing any particular promotion. I am basing that on the few people who've been willing to reveal their earnings on the community threads, so I am prepared to be proved wrong.
I now think I understand why Helium is so keen for us to do self-promotion. Search engines judge the "success" of your site by the number of links back to it from other sites. By urging us all to create links back to Helium, they ensure the Helium site ranks high. But in terms of us as individuals, the number of links we each have to our own work is a drop in the ocean and not really likely to get the search engines' attention. If you type Marisa Wright into Google, you do see a lot of my articles - but you don't find them if you google the subject matter, which is what matters!

Yes self promotion or hiring someone that can is the key.
Me, I am low key. I am not on anywhere to earn at all as there is simply too much competition now.
Good luck with all Marisa.

Hi Holla,
My username on Helium is Marisa Wright. Do you mean you've posted 10 pages on Helium? It's Helium earnings I was talking about.
