Today dailies read the national institute of ocean is going to set up desalination plant in chennai, the third largest city in India.
It is a wonderful news for chennai people
as this project put behind for 4 years.I am happy to note that already a desalination plant existing which (NIOT- national institute of oceans tecnology) had built it in lakshadweep in 2005.According to the director of NIOT it had been proved the tecnology was economically viable.
I hear the water produced by the desalination plant could be sold as cheaply as 3 paise per litre..which is the most cheapest and affordable by poor people too..
By using this technology sea surface water is converted to vapour which is then condensed into portable water .using sea cold sea water drawn from a deep of 500 meters.
Every summer i have seen people here in chennai suffer due to water scarcity and even the rich people spend more money to fill their water tanks daily..sometimes its not easy to purchase water provided if we have money due to increase in demand for water..
Being a resident of chennai iam very much happy and welcome this decision to help people overcome the water shortage problem..
I learn many countries are successful. Why not india.!

Yes, this is long over due, If I'm not wrong a similar initiative was taken when Rajiv Gandhi was the prime minister of India. This should be definitely be implemented and also in other places like Ramnad and Tuticorin

Suba, like you I am also feeling happy that atleast through desalination plant drinking water/water problem of your city can be sorted out. I also feel that there is plenty of water in the ocean and sees and our scientists and technologists should come out with some novel and useful methods, so that sea water could be utilised for us.
