Hi terrych,
I live in Canada, and my parents live in the USA. I usually only see them once or twice a year as I have their only grand child. We keep in touch a LOT though, we talk on the phone once or twice a week.

Yes, keeping in touch is very important if you don't see your family all that often. The phone and via email are a great way!

When I was living in Germany , it was for me 45 minutes by the plane to go home and seven hours by car.I would go visit my family every three month or more. Now I am in USA so it is much more far from them , but I am plaing to go home for Christam.I hope this long flight would be not that bad.

I think it all depends on the family and how often you communicate. My mum lives in Germany while I live in Singapore. I try to see my mother once a year, either I fly over or she will fly over to Singapore. We also speak on the phone on a weekly basis - and of course there is also email, msn and all sorts of other wonderful software that makes communication over distance so much easier.
My Dad is a little less communicative and we keep to communicating on special occasions like Birthdays (I call him on his and he calls me on mine) and CHinese New Year. I've had no great desire to fly over to Bangkok where he lives while he has not come to Singapore for quite sometime.

My dad and I lived in the same town for over 10 years. He moved from Texas to Arkansas about 2 years ago. I am ashamed to say that I probably see him more now than I did when we were 10 miles from each other. While he never comes to visit me, I visit him at least every 3 or 4 months.

The most difficult decision I have ever made was where to go once I graduated from college. The university I attended was only 50 miles from my hometown, so I could go home and have dinner with my family any night of the week. I had always lived in the Houston area, but many of my friends moved to Dallas after college and the first time I visited the city, I fell in love with it and wanted to give it a try. The biggest factor that initially held me back was the distance from my family. I decided that I couldn't pass up the opportunity to venture out and try a different area while I'm still young and free to go wherever I choose, so I moved to Dallas and haven't looked back. I miss my family very much, and I wish that I could be at every birthday party and family gathering, but I'm very happy with my decision to move away. I have managed to not go more than two months without seeing them. I go home as much as I can, and they come here to visit, and sometimes we meet up somewhere in between. Family is extremely important, but don't be scared to separate from them in order to experience a great life for yourself.

In my case, my family lives in our province that is why I cant see them as often as I like because the fare is quiet expensive. And have responsibilities that I just cannot lve. So i visit them twice a year and spend vacations there. God know how much I miss my family but right now that is all that I can do...
