I watched law & order svu last night and I could not believe it. Is there really web sites ,virtual web game, like that? I know I am not very smart when it comes to web sites but that seems a little over the top.Is there really someone that controls everything like making the sun come up like they did last night on L&O?

I saw someone else mentioned Second Life, that is the closest thing right now to what the show had. I believe the news story actually came from an incident of someone in real life being killed over something they did in a video game. IIRC the situation was not like that in the SVU episode though. There are a lot of sick people out there who will play the kid games (like Flyff or Trickster) and trap them into a false sense of security.
My husband and I are very tech savvy and both gamers. We are on top of anything technological that goes on in our house and heavily monitor what my 8 year old plays online. I would hate to be a parent who does not play or like video games, I don't know how you would ever know what your kid was doing online.

I am not a gamer or tech savvy but i suppose it has to do with my age. My youngest is almost 18. I suppose I should get more savvy due to the fact I do have grandchildren one is 3. He already knows how to use the computer. I don't let him online just play games I have bought. I better Learn. thanks for the info!

I love L&O: SVU. They usually just take things similar to whats going on in the real world. So, while what they use on the show is SIMILAR to things on the real world, it's not the exact thing on the real world. Like everyone else said it's similar to this stuff. Heck there are probably people out there who could find out all this stuff and do it... but it's not exactly like something that's out there.

You know, my husband asked the same question! The premise of the show is that there is an alternate universe online, where people can create avatars which then act out ... well, a variety of things. Given SVU's theme, the avatars in question are acting out fantasies, ranging from (relatively) benign to extremely hardcore and what would be illegal in real life.
.
I know that there's a site called Second Life, where people ... er... people's avatars... live, work, play, sleep, sleep around, earn money, invest, basically everything you do in real life. I've never played it but I know a few folks who do SL to the exclusion of real life!
There's also an online role-playing game similar in theme to Dungeons and Dragons; I can't recall the name of it as it's probably been five years since it even crossed my radar.
Whether a player could use their avatar for
those" purposes... that, I don't know. It wouldn't surprise me a bit - both because technology's getting there and also because Law & Order episodes tend to come from "headlines".

You know how stupid i am i didn't even what avatars were!Man the internet is getting scarier and scarier for parents. Just another thing you have to watch out for these days. One of the reasons i watch L&O is because it does often come from headlines. Thanks for the info. Ofcourse i will never check out those sites.
