Denied, What's a Byline?

United States

I tried submitting some things to associated content and it was denied. The reasoning was this: "This content is already published online, without your byline. We will accept previously published conetent, but if we find it online it must include your byline." This might be a dumb question but what is a byline? How can I fix this? Thank you.

a "byline" is where you write "by Lily of the Thorns"

What they want you to do is put a byline on the work you have published elsewhere, to prove that it's yours. Wherever it is, it should clearly state that it's by you and no one else, to avoid plagiarism.

so i can just easily add a byline to my articles? Just type it at the bottom of the article and repost it?

I just reread where you said it was posted at Helium. I believe it's against the rules at Helium to add your name to an article there.

I just double checked and yes, it's against Helium's rules to put your name in the article anywhere. It's automatically added, though, so you might need to take AC to task about this one. They should allow nonexclusive use of it. Email them or go to the forum with the problem.

Although your problem over at Associated Content doesn't have anything to do with this, I do get the feeling that they don't think much of Helium. A lot of people do publish the same thing on both sites, but unless you are willing to post your work for free on AC, I am not sure it's really that beneficial. Can anyone speak to this issue?

What the concern probably is, is that you use a different name or penname on one site or the other. For example, if on AC, you are "Lily [real last name]" but on Helium, you are "LilyoftheThorns," AC would have no verification that you are the same person. Best way to fix this is to make it so that your name is the same on both sites. If you want to publish under two different names, howver, you could send AC a message explaining the difference in names, and they might then accept your piece. Good luck! :)

But I use the same name on both sites X.X I use LilyoftheThorns at both Helium and AC. I always use the same username if it is available.

I don't think I submitted it as non-exclusive. I'll go do that first before messgaing the admin :) Thank you.

Okay, then that is unusual. I would suggest E-mailing admin and asking them to re-review the article. Make sure you've submitted it as non-exclusive, too. :)

Lily, they won't pay you upfront if your article is published somewhere else. The only way you will make money off the article is by page views, and that doesn't pay much. I suggest publishing you articles to AC, instead of Helium, because AC pays more, and if it's your original work, and not posted anywhere lese, you will get upfront payment, which is anywhere from 3 to 50 dollars. (I usually get 4.50)

I'll def. start posting my articles to AC more. Because I've had troulbe building up my earnings for helium/ I'm not even at 3 bucks yet and I have over 40 articles! X.X I wish I would have known about AC before posting all those articles at Helium. Thank you.
